Weird autofocus problem
on: December 08, 2010, 17:43:23 PM
Ok this is slightly worrying me.

Was out on the last fieldtrip of the year today, which was scrub clearance with the first years. I think it was probably around 0 degrees, so cold, but not super cold.

I had the camera with me and was taking some shots when I noticed the camera wasnt focusing. I had it in spot mode so decided to make use of the 19-point autofocus. I switched mode and lifted the camera to my eye and it was focus-locked on certain points, and wouldnt re-focus when I half pressed the shutter button or pressed af-on.

After a few secs the focus lock went and allowed me to refocus. This occurred quite a bit during the day, and went extreme when I pointed it at the bonfire, it was constantly trying to focus on the bonfire without me pressing anything.

Having nearly exclusively used just single spot focusing in the past and not messing around with options Im unsure if Ive somehow toggled a setting on the camera, but does anyone have any suggestions?

It seems the 7D has autofocus issues when I google it, but all the hits so far refer to it just not focusing properly, rather than focusing when you dont want it to.

Not yet. Cant seem to replicate it now Im back at home. Its weird, Id say its the cold, but I took it out on Thurs in the snow without issue.

Obviously I need to check the battery as well as lens contacts I guess, but given the smoke in the area I didnt want to open anything up if it could be avoided.

The AF-ON button only makes it auto focus like a half shutter-button press though doesnt it?

I dont think I was pressing any buttons, it did seem to be doing it as I lifted up the camera, so I guess potentially the shutter button could be borked or have some moisture on the contact or something. Will have to put it through its paces and if necessary send it to Canon to look at if I can pin down what causes it etc.

Different model, manufacturer etc but my K10D has only crapped out on me because of the cold once, and that was the battery not liking -10C in Paris last year. Id expect a camera on the 7Ds level to be at least as resiliant to the cold as my K10. Id have thought the weather sealing would mitigate against moisture in the switch. Of course it could be defective.

Is it possible that with gloves on you pressed a button without realising?

No gloves when using the camera. It really did seem to trigger when I lifted it to my eye, only thing that ive changed recently was the Mn-F button to put the electronic level in the viewfinder but I doubt that could do it. Will hopefully be able to look into it more at the weekend.

I presume the 7D is above such silly gimicks as the doohicky which detects you putting it to your eye which some of the Sonys have? IIRC that can be set to trigger AF.

Not sure, I have a feeling it has a sensor so that the LCD turns off when you put it to your eye to prevent back-lighting your face and save battery. Dont think Ive seen any mention of it sorting the autofocus though.

Think tomorrow Ill check if theres new firmware and factory reset it to be safe. Ive not encountered the issue today when I briefly used the camera.

Hmm, I was stalking the (avian) birds today, and encountered the problem again. This time the centre focus point was lit up and focusing as if I just had spot focusing on. Bit annoying as its the first time Ive got tits in the frame.

However a bit of fiddling and it seems that a certain method of selecting the focus points might have fixed things.

Basically on the 7D there are at least 2 different ways to choose the focus points (probably more). Theres a quick menu button you can press which brings options up on the LCD, and you can choose through that way, which is what I was doing. You can also press a button and then the m-Fn button whilst looking through the viewfinder which cycles through the options. The quick button method did nothing when I was in the field, but just by pressing the focus point button and then m-fn to cycle through the options once seems to have cleared the lock.

So maybe I am pressing random combos (99% sure I didnt) whilst moving the camera, or perhaps the camera getting cold too quickly is doing something inside. Ill keep my eye on it, hopefully will end up out in the forest in the next week sometime :)
