Its the lenses im a bit confused upon & these are the main difference between packages.. some are same manufacturer (canon or nikon) some packaged with Sigmas & others with Tamron

Any advice in which to go for? I want it for shooting Local Sports & maybe some scenery shots of the surrounding area.

Or maybe go for a totally different SLR?

Cheers Pop-Pickers

First piece of advice, look closely at those lenses!

The camera is all very well, and both of those models are capable of some stunning results (though personally Id take a close look at the Pentax K10D if I were you, its looking like a serious contender to these two and Im not just saying that because Im a Pentax user) but with cheap glass on it you wont get a decent picture.

I would forget about any of those kits except the ones which come with Canon lenses. There arent any with genuine Nikon lenses (which is a shame because for my money the D-80 is the better of the two cameras). All the Tamron and Sigma lenses start from 28mm which just isnt wide enough on a DSLR.

Frankly the seller is trying to sell that kit in a way which would immediately turn me off the deal. He is trying to sell kit which is at best consumer grade stuff as "Pro quality". Id be willing to bet none of the accessorys he is selling are worth having. I havent used any of the specific lenses but 70-300 lenses in general tend to be pretty poor (with one or two notable exceptions).

In short if I were you Id look seriously at a reputable dealer in this country. Rip off Britain is not nearly so bad for camera gear as it is for everything else and every time Ive looked into importing Ive come to the conclusion that the hassle isnt worth the small saving.

Take a look at Jacobs website, they have a pretty wide selection of DSLRs around the £600 mark with passable manufacturers own lenses. They also have the Nikon D-80 with Nikon 18-70 lens for £700. Now THAT is a lens, it has a fine reputation and wont leave you wanting to replace your standard lens in 3 months time.

Alternatively they also have the Pentax K100D for £539 with 18-55 and 50-200. I have both of these for my Pentax and the 50-200 in particular is a stunning lens for the price, it is the only zoom I have which is actually sharper than my primes in its range.

Unfortunately their Canon selection is a little limited but they do have the 400D  (XTi in the states) body only and theres nothing to stop you buying the lens you want on top.

Watch the video on the canon one, if you get excessive dust in then you may have to have it cleaned professionally.

Have you got any suitable lenses? if so go with the make, other than that if both prices are equal and you can get a Nikon lens go for that rather than the Canon. For wide to moderate telephoto you need a 18-55mm, for long distance a 55-200mm is good.

If you want to just do sporting/wildlife and have limited cash then you could just go for the 55-200mm and leave the other for later - if you find you need it. An x2 teleconverter would also be useful for long range if you cant afford a big lens for distance work.

28 is bearly wide angle on any reasonably priced DSLR (as in not the Canon 5D or 1Ds).

To get the same field of view as a 28mm would give you on 35mm film you need 18mm on the DSLRs you are looking at.

28mm gives you an equivalent fov of a 43mm lens on film, which is basically a standard lens.

The standard kit lenses which come with the current lineup of DSLRs from Nikon, Canon and Pentax are all 18-55 which makes a good close (but not super close) range lens.

I thought that was probably what you meant, but since some of those ebay items come with dodgy old Tamron 28-80s I didnt want him to get confused, especially since I used to own one of that very model and ditched it very quickly! they are astoundingly bad, even for a cheap 3rd party zoom.
