To cut a long story short, I have acquired a 406 HDI estate.
Basically, rather disturbed by an enormous bouncing/knocking motion as soon as i hit 30mph i pulled over and checked all of the wheels for excessive play etc. I found that the offside rear wheel had about 3 inches of play on it, allowing me to effectively "steer" the rear wheel!
Quite alarming. Anyway its booked into a garage for thursday... Any ideas what its likely to be/cost?
With limited car knowledge, i thought perhaps suspension or rear axle?
Also, will it do the car any harm to drive it (slowly) in the meantine?

Sounds like half the taxis I went in in Tanzania.
Wheel bearing would be my guess.

Wouldnt drive it slowly as well its a wheel... youve 4 of em, but with 3... unless its a robin reliant or has the ability of the freaky citroen hydrostatic suspension system, then... youll end up wrapping it around a tree if it seizes, falls off, generally breaks anymore.
Someone did suggest that it could be a bearing... is that a costly repair?
same question to CV joint... Expensive?

Is it just under power or when turning? Cause CV = only when turning apparantly, and to be honest it was so long ago I cant blimmin remember myself what my parents was like.
It is neither under power nor when turning, just when i reach certain speeds. its clearly not staying in line properly, where the two rear wheels should obviously be facing frontwards, its got play on it allowing it to move side to side, therefore causing colossol bouncing when reaching a speed of about 30.
Wheel Bearing, i would be _very_ surprised to find CV joints on the back of a front wheel drive car that doesnt have rear wheel steering.
Yes sounds like bearing, dont drive it as it will damage the hub, stub axle and more.
And as beaker said no cvs on the back.
could be broken suspension component or totally shot bushes on the back, no CV joints on the rear and if it were the wheel bearing with that much play id expect the wheel to have fallen off

Ok chaps, sounds like it might well be a bearing.

Normally the price is an arm and a leg...
Shouldnt be too big a job though.
Wheels bearing are not much to buy, and fitting, it can be done by any mechanic even those nooblet 1 day a week mechanics, so if you get charged and arm and a leg, scrap the car and buy something decent.
bearing - £20
fitting - 30 mins to an hour
Got the car back... It cost £102, I cant remember the name of the exact part, but basically the rod which keeps the wheel in alignment had actually snapped.
Not too expensive and had it back same day some Im happy!
I suspect you were still done a bit tho.
