when you say it had no power..... was the engine struggling or was it revving loads but not making you go any faster ?

I think its the gear linkage that joins your gearstick to the gearbox... I dont specifically know your car, but can be pretty sure that the gearstick is in the middle of the car, and the gearbox is under the bonnet on the passenger side... theres 2 poles and a couple of ball joints to transfer what you do to the gearstick over to the gearbox...

I think there worn out or working loose or need adjusting !

and when you thought you were in 1st, Id be willing to bet you were really in 3rd !

.... when you were pulling away in 1st.... if the engine revved loads but the car just went slow then its the clutch (power isnt being transfered from the engine to the clutch properly)..... but if it felt like you were trying to tow a house along behind you.... then its the gear linkage

No offense mate - I am car stupid! Dont get me wrong I can drive fine but thats it! To be honest - it got me home fine last night and back to work this morning without any problems. 4th still feels a bit chunky but it is going in without any hassle. 1st was fine (I think your right I reckon I was in 3rd probably still worrying about what had just happened in 4th!!). Im starting to think that I may have just missed 4th as well stupidly. I do think the clutch needs replacing (if nothing else just to make it bite earlier as getting off the mark on a junction is a bit deadly) but Im hoping the gears are ok. Think Ill get a service ASAP and just try and be a bit more careful with my my gear changes and clutch control.

Hahah imagine going out in the hills in Weardale on a nearly burnt out clutch out on the hills for 3+hrs then finally decide to head home and then 5mins from home and the clutch goes after all that.

Ive had to use break down recovery three times so go ensure you have cover Always worth that extra bit of cash Ive had my ECU die, My Car Done Over and a Burnt Out Clutch. Best money I spend all year IMO

Oh dont worry - I got RAC top level cover as soon as I got a Rover!! Never leave home without my little member card and mobile phone!
