Firstly if I sound stupid - bear with me! I know NOTHING about cars at all.
On the way to work this morning I tried to go into 4th but it crunched. Tried it a couple more times but I couldnt get into 4th. By that time I had reached the juntion and went down the gears, 3rd and 2nd were fine. In 1st gear I had barely any power. I crawled off the roundabout and just managed to get up into 2nd which was fine then went back up through the gears which were all fine (including 4th) . Got to work at the end of that road and had to go back into first which was fine - I then parked using first/reverse without any problems. Now maybe I just f*ed up my attempts at moving to fourth and failed to use the clutch properly when in first but Im a bit worried about what it could be. Not looking forward to the drive home tonight. Does this sound like a standard problem or anyone have any ideas?
Cheers
Not a standard problem.... Is it taking a while for power to cut in? What kind of a car is it and how old is it and how long ago did you have it in for any maintanence?
could be gear linkage or even worn engine mounts or clutch if its not disengaging fully it will be hard to select gears
Its a rover 414 L reg. It had a service last May for the MOT (Ive only had it 3 months).
Its not taking a long time for the power to cut in - it just seemed to have no power that one time. Like I said once I got off the roundabout it was fine which is whats making me think maybe it was my imagination but it was weird and bloody scarey creeping along on this huge busy roundabout. I guess Ill just have to see how it goes on the drive home then get it serviced ASAP.

Theres your problem right there PMSL ;) joking
Lol hey gimme a break its my first car and it was free. Ive just never been interested in cars - hell I made it to 25 without a license!! I kinda like the lil bugger now Ive got used to it though.
:D

would attribute for the lack of power in first though?
if the clutch is slipping it might cause issues with power but i dont know rovers.. for good reason ;)
thanks for the advice. Hopefully itll see me through this week - as of Friday Ill have a list to and from work will be ok while it gets fixed/replaced lol!
I know Rovers are the most unexciting thing ever but I must admit I do enjoy driving it - I think because its a challenge lol!!
If its hitting that point in a clutch life then I would suspect you have a week left, just dont put to much pressure on the clutch and no pulling away with very high revs. Just drive with in low rev levels and not jamming the clutch in and out and things will be fine till you get it in the garage :) (p.s. dont blame me if it just suddenly dies hahah)
Im screwed! The car always revs out like mad you cant help it! The clutch doesnt bite till its practically at the top and the accelerator is as sensitive as hell! Even my dad revs it and hes been driving for 40 years. Well I just hope it gets me home tonight because I have a wedding to go to .
Cheers fot the help guys!
thatll be a good indication that the clutch is on its way out pal if its not biting til the top of the travel

Agreed :)
A clutch kit is cheap. Doing the work is a pain in the arse... Well it was on the 205 :) But doing the clutch your self if you know what your doing is meaning you can set it up how you like it :)
sounds like your clutch is on its last legs, my 214 went for 18months like that tho. Can be annoying tho, esspecially because of how revy the k-series is.
Not sure about your problems getting into 4th tho, see how it goes and if you keep having trouble it could be worn gear linkage like binary says.
synchro could be on its way out too?

thats a good possiblity but the PG1 box is pretty tough, unless it has been abused. might be worth an oil refill and a bottle of molyslip.
what year 414 is it?
when you say it had no power..... was the engine struggling or was it revving loads but not making you go any faster ?
at first I was going to agree with everyone about the clutch.... but Im not going to now ! (whoop)
(you said your a noob, so Ill spell it all out for you, dont get offended if I over do it!)
I think its the gear linkage that joins your gearstick to the gearbox... I dont specifically know your car, but can be pretty sure that the gearstick is in the middle of the car, and the gearbox is under the bonnet on the passenger side... theres 2 poles and a couple of ball joints to transfer what you do to the gearstick over to the gearbox...
I think there worn out or working loose or need adjusting !
that explains it not going into 4th (because it wouldnt ligne up properly)
and when you thought you were in 1st, Id be willing to bet you were really in 3rd !
.... when you were pulling away in 1st.... if the engine revved loads but the car just went slow then its the clutch (power isnt being transfered from the engine to the clutch properly)..... but if it felt like you were trying to tow a house along behind you.... then its the gear linkage :D

No offense mate - I am car stupid! Dont get me wrong I can drive fine but thats it! To be honest - it got me home fine last night and back to work this morning without any problems. 4th still feels a bit chunky but it is going in without any hassle. 1st was fine (I think your right I reckon I was in 3rd probably still worrying about what had just happened in 4th!!). Im starting to think that I may have just missed 4th as well stupidly. I do think the clutch needs replacing (if nothing else just to make it bite earlier as getting off the mark on a junction is a bit deadly) but Im hoping the gears are ok. Think Ill get a service ASAP and just try and be a bit more careful with my my gear changes and clutch control. :D
Thanks for the help everyone!!

Hahah imagine going out in the hills in Weardale on a nearly burnt out clutch out on the hills for 3+hrs then finally decide to head home and then 5mins from home and the clutch goes after all that.
Ive had to use break down recovery three times so go ensure you have cover :) Always worth that extra bit of cash :) Ive had my ECU die, My Car Done Over and a Burnt Out Clutch. Best money I spend all year IMO :)
Oh dont worry - I got RAC top level cover as soon as I got a Rover!! Never leave home without my little member card and mobile phone!
