Title: Bought a
Post by: Bacon on October 07, 2010, 02:08:04 AM
02 Ford Mondeo TDCI 130BHP with 7 month mot and 12 months tax worth £155 :D for an amazing £775 + buyers tax at the auction.

Thinking of having an MOT pre-test / inspection done, and a Compression test on the engine, anything else i should consider?

It has a few scratches, a small crack in the front bumper but is overall tidy condition. Its done 120k miles, not bad considering how low i got it for, are these chain driven?

Thanks

I didnt realise youd actually got it when you mentioned it on MSN, thats a bargain. 120k is nothing for a TDCI.

Cambelt is due every 60k isnt it, are you thinking of getting it changed just in case?

I was under the impression it was chain driven?

Do chains need replacing? I always thought they lasted a lifetime, but i read its every 120k

Yeah, the old Duratorq is chain driven, from 2005 onwards (I Think) they used the PSA 2.0 HDi instead, which is belt driven.

Yep chain driven, my 03 tdci 145k miles is in for its MOT today.

Already know its going to cost some money, as the large pipe from the EGR valve to the intercooler is split, causing it to drop a massive cloud of unburnt diesel when I floor it!

Hopefully thats the only major thing though, its my second Mondeo of that shape and really like them :)

Sounds like a bargain :)

The only things to be wary with these are injector problems, failing turbos and also the dreading Dual Mass Flywheels and also as you have already suggested the intercooler hoses which can split - aswell this is common on these.

Has it got any service history with it at all?

most important thing to do is..... block the EGR valve off ASAP !!!!!

and check the tensioner on the fan belt....

wouldnt bother with a compression test etc... as long as its running ok :)

Whats the benefit of blocking the EGR valve?

it lets a load of exhaust crap back into your engine...

if you take it off, or take off the air inlet manifold itll be FULL of crap/gunk....

it can get bad enough that you couldnt even fit your little finger in because the walls are coated with so much crap !

and the EGR valves gunk up and need replacing too (about every 50k or so is normal)

theres no negative side to blocking it off.... its supposed to reduce your emissions (and it does) but it makes naff all difference really, and its only active when youre running at low power / ticking over
(so makes no difference to your MOT)

if your air intake manifold is gunked up, clean it up and you should notice a bit of a performance boost... little bit of gunk = not much difference, lots or gunk = will drive like a new car afterwards !

Might think about that, my EGR was cleaned out about 6 months back when there was a vacuum pump issue, and should be a lot better now the spit in the egr pipe has been fixed :)

thrash it every so often and itll be grand.

or get whoever remaps it to switch it off.

Took it in to get a small oil leak looked at and it came back costing me a total of £55 to put right, while it was in there they replaced a pipe also, near the turbo as it was whining a bit, seems to have calmed down, overall its running like a dream and has set me back £810, next question is when should i sell it and double my outlay :P
