Title: brake seized
Post by: Pete on August 21, 2009, 16:11:29 PM
I got a seized caliper on my mini, I took it to the garage and they charged me £46 to clean it but its still stuck..  so sod em.

Is it worth trying a repair kit or should I just get a 2nd hand caliper off ebay?

edit: it makes a creaky noise when I push the pedal in - sliding pins?

Id get a second hand one, strip it down/clean it up to assess the condition, and recon if necessary.  Any scrapyards near you? might be worth getting one yourself rather than trusting to the interweb.

new mini might be too new for scrap yards ?  breakers will be sucking them all up ?

take the wheel off at have a look at it... chances are the rubbers are damaged and have let moisture/crap in...

easy fix, remove it, free the sliders off (careful not to damage the rubbers), clean them up a bit, add a bit of coper ease... job done :-)

(aka, take it off, pull the sliders out, rub them on a rag + jam the rag in the hole, lubricate and replace)

:D

did they change the pads while they were on ?

if not... change the pads at the same time.. (do both sides) - will mean the sliders that were sticking will be in a different position so itll give them time to free off)

The rubber seal around the piston is torn :(

I put some copper grease on the pins and on the handbrakey bit and it seems ok now. No creaking noise and it turns easily enough.
