Title: Brakes?
Post by: Eagle on July 28, 2009, 19:44:49 PM
Aye-up. :D

Cars gone tits-up.  This morning I noticed the handbrake was really stiff and it had locked onto the wheel (albeit briefly).  Normally takes four clicks to brake the car but was braking on two.

Later on, driving home there was a thumping sound then half a mile later a deep, thudding rattle coming from the rear.  Footbrake also seems weak and pedal is spongy.

Anyone hazard a guess as to whats wrong?  Car is VOR of course until I get it fixed.

 :disappointed:

Id guess a cylinder leaking, but not knowing the car or type of brakes its a bit of a wild guess.

Really?  Hmm.  I thought it was the discs or summink.

Its a 2001 Megane - no idea what type of brakes.  Stoppy ones? ;)

It really depends on what brakes youve got.

Disc brakes are well a disk with the pads and calipers on the outside.

Drum discs are a drum where all components are inside the drum.

Personally Id say youve got something come off and its leaking brake fluid, or atleast letting air into the braking system. Call out AA home rescue to see if they can fix it.

Drum discs at rear.

Hmm, never thought of that.  I have Direct Line Home thingy and Ive never used it.  Might as well get my money back...

Cheers. :)

lining likely come off the shoes

careful it doesnt get jammed between the shoe and the drum or the wheel will lock up (if thats what it is)

Twas the drum that had corroded and fallen off!  Fixed now. :)

Megane for the win.
