Title: Car recommendations..
Post by: Binary Shadow on July 19, 2007, 22:51:14 PM
Err.. im not really sure what reaction this will get but here goes..

The Range Rover will be leaving in a few months.. its just too thirsty.. whod have guessed!

So i need a car to replace it, ideally the most frugal car that i can get my hands on for £1500 or less, cheap to insure would be cool too.

Now usually at this point id seek out the nearest diesel astra but they are horrific and i really dont fancy one.

Any suggestions.. reliable and some street cred would be nice (avoid pug and citreon as the ones i know arent reliable and yes i know a few owners).

Alternatively something a little nicer for £2k and a little more expensive to run. tbh anything will be cheap after the range rover. Something with some luxury would be nice. Was thinking BMW 323 or something but lets see what people suggest.

iv got a Vectra 2.0 CD Auto here but its needing the door and front wing replaced, it will be easier to run than the range rover for sure but im not sure its efficient enough

£15 got me just under 130 miles, though that is mainly A-Road stuff so running at a constant speed.  If you want to go really cheap to run then go for a 1.5 Nexia.  Or alternatively an old Polo 1.9 SDi, though they are awfully slow.

not go time to say much, gotta go to work, but a Coupe VVC sounds like a good idea.

Cheap, 150bhp, 40mpg, well specd, full leather, nice to drive.

Alfa 156.  Couple of mates have them, dirt cheap to buy but watch out for the Tsparks.  Cost about £130 for a set of plugs.  Theirs seem reliable anyway.

as much as it pains me to do so i agree with dev on the rover coupe as long as you can live with the bland interior and image.

Or you could buy the better built, better handling, much, MUCH faster MR2 turbo.

And youd have 12 second standing quarters with not much £ thrown at it.

I get around 30mpg on mine at present with combination motorway and back road blasts

I was thinking of selling my Volvo 740 SE

Grp 12 insurance
2.0L 8 Valve
262,000 miles
LPG conversion (Petrol, LPG or Auto)
About 10 months MOT
5 and half months TAX
3 new tyres!
3 new wipers

Electric mirrors, 4 x Electric windows, Towbar and full electrics, Electric sunroof (needs a little manual help ;))

Id accept £1500... for that Id leave the head unit in!.

I was seriously thinking of selling my Volvo

However, it does need a new exhaust and is running rich at the moment. It also needs either a new gear box mount, under £10 or the wheels aligned properly.

It does have some little niggles but still runs pretty damn good.

I have spent a lot of money on it and would want that back.

It should normally do about 25 to the gallon.

The only thing is it has no street cred, but it does weigh 1950Kgs and is a great towing vehicle.

Id take a sensible offer considering Ive spent close to £300 just getting it on the road (£99 tax included) :)

Or you could get a newer Volvo, something like a 850 2.0L 20V, not as heavy, FWD but good towing machine Id think :)

was put off them when i was cut up heavily by one a year or so ago, and the ones iv seen up close have been full of rust.

edit: the mk1 MR2s do nothing for me, the mk2s are lovely (IMO)

I like that 2.8 Isuzu TBH. Not the most refined engine ever, but the Trooper i was driving at work for a while had 320k on the clock, and it was still going strong with no major engine parts replaced.

What sort of economy do those old patrols get? the white style the UN used for their "peace keeping" forces.

why they used that thing at all is beyond me. The 2.8 and 2.5 arent too shabby, the 2.3 is just terrible.  The later model 2.2 isnt too bad, but it lacks any kind of poke.  They just feel flat.
