Title: Car recommendations...
Post by: moony1234 on June 19, 2006, 09:40:39 AM
Morning all!

Ill be buying a new [used] car in a few months and I need some suggestions!

Below is my stricccct criteria :p

Diesel [Turbo - Must be >120BHP as that is what my current car has and "once youve popped you cant stop" and all that...]

<70,000 miles

10 years old max

budget: Ã,£4K max.

Other stuff: I love my gadgets/electrics etc so the more the better! Also I do quite a lot of driving on long trips and I have a medium sized dog to get in the car too. I need to be able to pack the car up full of 3 big suitcases and still have room for the dog... an estate/touring perhaps??

Let the suggestions commence!

Ta in advance :D

Your criteria are too high for that budget !

you could get a Rover 75 with all the trimmings for under Ã,£4k if you looked hard enough, you might be looking 80kmiles + tho.

The CDTis have 135hp and the CDTs have 115hp, but they have exactly the smae engine and can be chipped to 160hp+

The engines are very strong aswell(BMW made) and do 250,000 easily.

Quick scout of autotrader reveals Vectras, Xsaras, Berlingos, 406s and a couple of people carriers.  All within the criteria.

Nothing good has left the rover factory since BMW Abandoned with the best bits.  Mini and Land Rover.  The rest is left to rot and rightly so.

The Rover 75. Girlfriends dad has one and loves it, does a lot of long journeys with a dog and suitcases etc Pritty much like you said...

So I back the choice on that. But then again its still pritty poor compared to over avaliable cars :p

deisel with that type of power isnt all that common until quite recently.  Also thr 75 is actually a damned good car, but if you ever want one avoid the V6 like its contagious.  Crap engine if the ones i know are anything to go by.

I was just going to suggest an R10, he could tie the dog across the bonnet and the suitcases to the rear wing....

Then I realised he was on a piddling small budget :(

None of them are TD > 120 bhp though

What would I have to "up" my budget to in order to fulfil my requirements?

Thanks for all your advice so far, quite like the Rover 75!

hey if youre going to go for a big saloon car & you like british cars + dont mind a 10 year old one  then you could pick yourself up a second hand jag XJ6 95 - 97 for around 4K (though bearing in mind - it will cost more to service if you use an official jag garage)

for some reason jags dont tend to hold thier value well.

They dont hold their value well because the build quality is ridiculous

My circumstances have changed slightly and therefore so have my needs!

Id like something quite sporty but with 5 doors/decent boot.

Something quick but diesel so the economy is there if I want it.

Budget is Ã,£8k max.

Sorry :D

For Ã,£8k you can definitely get a decently specd Audi A4 Avant TDI. Probably looking at the 130 BHP 1.9 TDI PD models, although you might spot a few 2.5s out there for about that much.

TBH, if you look around hard enough youll find some VW Golf Mk4 GTI 25th Anniversary models going for roughly that much. How the Mk4 GTI should have been in the first place, looks the part, nice recaros & BBS. They sold this special with either a 180 BHP 1.8T or a 150 BHP 1.9 TDI PD. Check out some pictures here (http://www.vwvortex.com/gallery/gallery2.php?mode=album&album=/Volkswagen/Golf%20-%20GTI%20-%20Rabbit/Golf%20IV/25th%20Anniversary%20GTI%20-%20Europe).

Thats probably what Id go for ;) Nice balance between economy, space and performance. As its a limited edition as well, something that little bit more special.

I would be looking for a nice MG ZS Turbo Diesel.
Not the fastest(120hp) but good engines.

Or maybe a sporty Seat Leon/golf TDI or somthing  :whoops:
