For cheap and Diesel try and get hold of an older 1.9 Pug.  The 306 isnt too bad in my experience.  Not a sports car, but you can pick a reasonable one up for under a grand.  Those 1.9D and 1.9TD engines just keep on ticking.  My old Renault had done just over 120k when I sold it on, and the guy still has it 4 years later, and its racked up to 190k.  Only engine parts that have been replaced are the water pump and the fuel cutoff.

for cheap and easy run get an AX or a 106 diesel

Really light so not much use on long journeys, but unbeatable as a town car as noone will want to nick it, AND you get over 80mpg

I will never own a Rover in my life time, I have a passionate dislike for them that border lines just under my hate for Citreon Saxos! ;)

I test drove a 1.9 Diesel 306 a while ago and it was dreadfully bad off the mark to the point I actually thought it was Dangerous.. Tho Ive been told to try again because something must be wrong with the one I had a go in..

The Non-Turbo 1.9D Pug engine is horrible, Thats what I had for a while due to my GTE dying a smokey death.  I was also tootling around in a 406 1.9TD at the same time, and the difference was amazing.  To be fair, at the lower end of the scale youll probably be able to pull a decent enough Pug TD of some type.  Be it in a Pug, Renault of Citroen.  I loath French cars with a passion, but that 1.9 is bulletproof.

yeah, you NEED the turbo goodness :-o

my mothers 1.8d fiesta is so slow it makes me want to cry.... you can change gear without taking the accelerator off the floor and the revs dont even increase !

The only second-rate part you will find in a Rover 400 bubble shape is the K-series engine.

The L-Series DERV is an amazing lump IMHO.  Even Honda used them.

they arent bad, look at the Ibiza on the same plate as well.  Normally a few quid cheaper, and up to a certain point it really was just replaced badges.  They where even built in the same factory in Spain.
