doesnt look very nice does it - not compact
and I wonder how much it weighs.
are there any details on how you change gear with it, I found the article a bit lacking in details.

Some more details here. (http://www.dekrabike.com/ddrive.htm) :)
bah, its still got standard shimano cogs inside there, they just hid them!
I was hoping itd have a slider or something so you could (like a CVT) gradually increase / decrease your gearing or something actually clever.
ho hum... :P
Shaft drive bikes have been around for oh...a hundred years already. They suffer from inefficiency and often are quite noisy. Chains suck, but theyre efficient, simple, and cheap.
If youre suffering from chain suck Id suggest your homebrewed lubrication fluids arent all theyre cracked up to be...:P
I personally think chains are just fine, dont really have a problem with them - as max says, they are pretty efficient, cheap and easy to look after.
mine only comes off, if I do something silly with the gears and are pedalling really hard at the time or something silly - I think they are reliable enough, and if you dont like one.. chuck it and get a new one :)
Providing you either use clips or tuch trouser legs into your socks when wearing long trousers chains arent a problem.

I keep forgetting to change gear in time so when i do my chain keeps bloody coming off :(
TBH though mines rusty anyhow, if i could be arsed id change it but the miles a month it does probably puts me off
