Quote from: zpyderIt does remind me about when I nearly plowed into a group of cyclists on a dual carriageway roundabout in town. There was a group of them, maybe a dozen. The first few entered the roundabout when it was clear, which was fair enough. It was when the rest followed like sheep that the problems started, I slammed on my brakes and ended up staring at 2 cyclists inches from my front bumper, with a small group about to cycle into the side of my car.

Im all for cycling, but there are some places that they shouldnt go, busy roundabouts being one of them :(

Part of the issue here I guess though is that we have an unusually large number of foreign/english languages schools, and lots of asian students. As a result they are all used to cycling, but not used to the amount of cars or the highway code, and never wear helmets :(

should have kept going. cyclists are the biggests c**ts on the road who think they are a rule to themselves.
hope you gave them a blast of the horn & a load of 4 letter abuse.

And where should they go? Perhaps we should ban dangerous and polluting cars from using roundabouts?

In the instance of roundabouts on busy roads where cars are entering and exiting at 30+ mph, and the cyclists are doing maybe 5-10mph, I would much rather they dismounted (or not) and crossed the road away from the roundabout. It is safer all round. Its what I do if Im on a bike at such a roundabout, as generally in a car you cant see the other side until youre almost there. The issue is made much worse at night when some of these people are not wearing any high vis gear or lights.

Other than roundabouts pretty much the only places I dont think they should go are the same kind of places that apply to scooters, motorways and the such. I know scooters are allowed on dual carriageways, but I dont think they should be either.

And to turn it on the head, the one place bikes arent allowed, which I think they should be, is the pavement on busy roads, when it is clear to see whether any pedestrians are out and no one is going to drive out of their driveway...

If you cant see that far ahead you shouldnt be going that fast, your fault. Cars should also give proper consideration to other road users.

Yes, I know that many bike users act like mongs, but just as many, if not more, car drivers do.

zpyder

Bah, you know what I meant. Many roundabouts are so shaped and sized etc that unless you go at 5mph it is impossible to be able to look everywhere at once, especially dual or triple-lane roundabouts. Generally around here they occur in non-urban areas where you do not expect to see a bike in the middle of the roundabout moving at walking pace whilst cars are entering it at a considerably faster pace :(

And before you say "you should go at 5mph then", if that were so, the roads in question would be gridlocked given the speed limit and volume of traffic. At least then I guess the cyclists should be a bit safer I guess...

Hope you get some luck and catch the guy that knocked you off your bike!

Quote from: Poison_UKGlad your okay and in one piece.

Cyclists in Newcastle are crazy, walking from the City Centre to Heaton and one of them comes into the Pedestrian side of the path and full on clips me in the back, he never stopped or anything just kept on riding.

Yeah sorry, hope it didnt hurt to much.

j/k wasnt me. :)

I quite agree, being an avid fan of driving, but now also cycling, I firmly believe that its really down to the drivers to give more consideration to others.

Ive yet to come across a crazy cyclist in all my years of driving, but Ive come across many crazy drivers!

Ive came accross my fair share of both. I think cyclists should take more care of the road laws. I know its quick to jump up onto kerbs and over the zebra crossing or what ever, but it is dangerous.

Ive probably had more run ins with crazy car drivers however, but they are more noticeable when they drive crazy as they do occupy more of the road and they can do a great more damage than a bike.

I think everyone should do the CBT, once you come away from that you REALLY do look for more bikes and I think that the CBT does make people a better driver, or atleast a more aware driver.

Come to York, the place is full of them at every hour of the day. No lights or reflective jackets in the middle of the night, riding three abreast, riding in the middle of the road, hopping across crossings when the lights are green for cars, riding in the middle of the road down a narrow lane and holding up a huge queue of traffic rather than pulling over and letting people past, you name it, they all seem to do it around here. Dont get me wrong, there are plenty of idiot drivers, in fact Id go so far as to say 50% of the people on the roads at the moment are completely incompetent or mentally unstable and shouldnt be trusted with a car. But you do get plenty of idiot cyclists in places as well.

zpyder

Ive come across both, but more car drivers I will admit, whether thats just to do with the fact more drivers are on the road I dont know.

The roundabout incident was the single worst "almost" accident of my driving career. generally the only other things Ive seen down here with cyclists other than non-reflective stuff and no helmet, is a disregard for the highway code when it comes to crossings and lights, where as a pedestrian Ive nearly been hit by cyclists ignoring the red light, cycling in no-cycling urban areas, and have witnessed a cyclist cross a junction when his direction had a red light :(

I also agree about doing the cbt, and/or cycling proficiency, just to make people more aware!

If where they come from is anything like Japan then everything stops for pedestrians/clyclists crossing a road (when the green man is showing/bird cheeping sound).  If they are foreign and in their country thats the norm then they need to learn very quickly that its not the same in the UK.
In japan the pedestrian is king at crossings.  Its a real shock to the system.

Ouch :( that sucks, at least your ok.
