Well, Im going to either die or not. So hold my beer and watch. Never did any type of retention system beyond clips with a fixie.
Countdown is about two hours till I can finish up my loose ends, then its Death Party(tm) time. :D
73F right now. Ahhhhh! :ptu:
gl man.
i cleaned my chain and gearset today as i could see it rusting  no more dodgy noises.
TBH I wouldnt ride fixed without SPDs. Dont like the idea of not having the breaking control if my feet slipped off platforms.
And on other news today, I think Im going to fixie my SS over christmas. Its just way too awesome.
LOL, thats what brakes are for, silly! Backpressure is more for tweaking speed before a turn and such.
No point having a back brake, the inertia of your legs on a fixie will act against the effectiveness of the brake if youre sloppy with your pedalling. Plus no back brake keeps you on your toes :D
Oh, please, not having a back brake is pure affectation when riding in traffic. Brakes can fail, and sometimes youll want to use mainly rear depending on road conditions. Its also nicer to use both brakes when riding in the hoods, as sure, you can have great braking with the front only--if your hands are strong enough from up there. Everybody I know that rides fix uses two brakes. Mainly bike shop guys and, Justin, a pro cyclocross rider. Its not horribly dangerous to ride without a rear, but how many grams is it? Youll want the lever anyway, as its still a good riding position. Thats all Ill say about it. ;)
The young emo kids around here, on the other hand, ride totally brakeless, and Im predicting one will die within the year. You know, stuff like blowing through intersections at night, with no lights, wearing black. Sympathy meter=0.
Theres no chance Id get on a bike without a front brake. My rear is largely innefective anyway though, since I built it up with a sh*tty cable and the routing is on the piss due to the brake taking the cable in the wrong side for my frame. Taking it off would annoy me less than knowing it wasnt 100% perfect
Take it off then. Im just being extra uber cautious. :P
Well, the wetland trail I ride was closed off for bridge construction, so not only did I break my spd/fixie cherry (took all of five seconds to clip in), I rode 7 miles on fire roads with 28mm tires. Now THAT is fun on a fixed gear. :D :D Total control. I now see why some cxcrossers run fixed. Wiped out in some pea gravel that was used to patch a wet section. Never fell down, but the bike went in a contrary direction and suddenly I was walking.
The regular pedals are going back on though, as this is my utility bike. Quite a trooper off road.
:w00t: GLOBAL WARMING!!11 :w00t:
74F atm and a storm front is hours away. Still sore from yesterday, but cant ... resist ... spandex. :D
arggh
windchill today got me. i forgot my coat.
14.5C, 58.1F, inside my house this morning, the central heating timer has failed and I need to get a new one :(
Managed to get it working on manual though but if you leave it on too long the place boils.
Well I trump you all. I was sat in lycra on a river for around 3 hours this morning in the freezing cold. Although for about 30mins of that I was roasty toasty. And f*cking knackered.
