Decided that it no longer needed power steering last week, was stuck on the isle of wight so all i could do was keep topping it up.
Got recovered home yesterday and the steering rack has blown, fluid filling the gaitors and pouring down under the car :(
Audi want £1600 to change it, stuff that! GSF quoted around £250 for the part so I'm going to do it myself.. fingers crossed hehe.
So I was without a car.. and that just doesnt work.. so bought one to cover me for the few weeks it'll take to get the parts and find the time to change it..
Tada:

Shes seen some action but should get me through till my Audi is fixed up :)
This is the reason i won't buy an V6/8 Monster LPG is because i know when it goes wrong its going to cost the price of a small car to repair, its a shame i would love to own a nice big car and not have to drive around in a 1.6, but then again when the Astra goes wrong its so cheap to fix.
Yeah the cost to fix a £50500 car that has dropped to £4000 is about the same as it was when it was £50500 lol properly crazy money!
Luckily I have the workshop manual and have a decent chance of being able to do it on my driveway :)

Yeh i know what you mean. I can usually rely on step father to do odd jobs but not steering racks, but my mate charges me £25p/h regardless of job so it never costs me too much to get outside help.
Yeah I'm lucky to have my dad about to help, I'd probably never manage it on my own!
Going to be a mission to change, need to drop a cat, a gearbox mount and a number of other easier bits and bobs to get to it.
Going to change the front brakes and do a service while I'm there, might as well hit it all at once.
The passat isn't too bad for the £650 i paid, hopefully i wont have any issues with it or selling it once I'm done.

£650 is a bargain for the Passat, down this way they tend to sell for a fair bit more, is it 1.8 20v or T or TDI?
its a 149k miles old 1.8 20v "sport"

They are good engines, don't know why they phased them out for the 2 litre , the 1.8 20v produces more power, seems funny to drop the engine.
Crappy news about your nice Audi, its a shame as they never have problems but when they do its always something big :(
You got a v. good price on the Passat, I feel fleeced having paid £800 for my P.O.S Skoda.

Nothing wrong with your Skoda, except the poverty spec.
Mechanically it seems fine, but that should be taken as granted with any car. Nothing in the interior works properly, its a P.O.S still.
It's always the way that when you need to buy a cheap car all you can find are POS's that aren't worth what they're being advertised at, but when you already have a car and don't need to buy one, you can always find cheap cars that are an absolute bargain! Sod's law.
Oh I dunno.
I've just Sorn'd the Soarer and picked up a W Reg Clio. It's woefully slow with it's beastly 1.2 8v engine.
Paid £450, with 80k on the clock.
A few niggles, as it's a french pos, but nothing major.

OMFG
Soopah is driving a Renault Clio, shame on you! :P
You will soon learn to hate every fibre of its cloth uphostery. I learned my lessons buying French, especially Renault. Never again... :disappointed:
When I was looking for my cheap car the rules were:
Not french
Not a rover
Less than £1000
Within 20 miles
I have a similar criteria, just a shame the purchase didn't go though me....
Well, I tell a lie. It belonged to a friend of Lynseys and she's going travelling for a year.
I was massively hung over and the conversation went...
"Want a look around it?"
"no no no :("
"Want a test drive"
"no, not really, Just give me the paperwork"

I have bought a sticker that says "snap-off, because it's french"
Well the attempt to change the steering rack is going ahead
Started yesterday at 9:30, finished at 16:30 and had only got to page 11 of 25 of the procedure
Currently car is on axle stands on the driveway, right hand cat is unbolted but car is not high enough to remove it doh!
Well 2 weekends and borrowing a friends ramp/lift and I have managed to replace the steering rack :ptu: that's not a job I would like to face again!
Unfortunately the LPG system has a fault now and i have no idea what the issue is :(
3 weekends later and its all done :) next weekend im changing the front brakes and doing an oil change.. it never ends.
I hate every fibre of my car's being.
I am actively trying to break it.
