So for better or for worse, Ive started playing a bit of golf, as it seems to be the thing to do where Im working at the moment.
Anyway, I acquired two or three clubs to swing around at the driving range and have been quite enjoying it, so Im looking to spend some of the Christmas cash on a set of beginners clubs.
Ive had a look at a RAM set(http://www.americangolf.co.uk/navproduct.asp?prod=151026), and a hippo set (http://www.onlinegolf.co.uk/431-29161), looking to spend probably between 100-150 sheets.
Just wondered if anyone plays on here, and whether they have any kit tips for a beginner!
Advice: buy used. Same goes for stuff like skis. A lot of people have to have the most "up to date" gear, so you can get last years kit for pennies on the pound. Its not like Golf clubs get worn out or anything with normal use.

Yeah my dad picked up a set and a bag thingy for peanuts, it looks a really boring game but its a laugh.

I agree it kinda does look boring, but from what Ive worked out so far, so much of it is actually in the head thats its a really entertaining challenge. Well see how far my patience lasts...

Ive been trying my best to persuade my friends to get a Wii but they wont have it. I need new friends it seems as they look cool as f**lk.
I got a second hand set last year for about Ã,£80 Ping with a bag and everything, hardly used by some city boy numpty. Second hand is easily the way to go if you live around a big city, pop along to the local gold course/club and they might even have second hand in the shoppe.

Golf isnt so much for the game, thats a side issue. What you are really there for is company and a good natter.
Indeed, part of the motivation is a bit of social.
The other part is that hopefully if I get stuck in now by the time Im actually an appropriate age to be playing golf, I might be an ok player :D (think about 25 years down the line)
Before you buy any clubs go into a pro-shop and get them to fit you. That will provide you with your ideal shaft length (oooerrr). You can then use that when looking at a secondhand set of clubs :)
One of the biggest mistakes people make is using clubs that are either too short or too long for them; it will seriously hamper your game.

My bro has a full set of some sh*t hot Titleist irons, limited number in the country, like 1ks worth or something :gag:
But yes, echoing the comments RE second hand, many just get light usage, and a lot of its like a fashion statement, its like having the best/newest shirt/car, you have to remember that many people who play this have far too much money.

There is no electrical bits inside to break down so its probably one of the best ideas to go second hand anyway, you can check them over and if they look good they should last you for years.
As you say some people buy new clubs every so often just to spend money, as to why? :shrug:
