Title: How much for a Stilo engine rebuild?
Post by: Rivkid on February 08, 2010, 17:09:08 PM
Hi chaps,

Mate of mine has blown the engine on a 2.4 litre Stilo Schumacher edition. He says the cranks gone and it needs rebuilding. Apparently new engines are looking the more expensive option. Anyone know how much this is likely to cost or any suggestions of anyone who could do good cheap job?

Buy a new car, unless your willing to travel half the country for well price used parts.

We had one back along and it cost a fortune for real basic parts, had to buy them 2nd hand in the end and still didnt make any money on the car, i.e. was not easy to sell once it was fixed.

Pop an Alfa V6 in there.
Or a 20VT from the Coupe :D

How damaged is the crank ? Can it be ground down and oversized bearings substituted, or is it badly out ?

Id have a go at rebuilding it first, the two of you could do it in a weekend - Ill get you all the torque settings from autodata

Not sure how much damage Ill have to ask him - it was at a friend of his place for awhile who does some mechanic work and he obviously couldnt do it or couldnt get the parts.

Wed absolutely love to do it ourselves but our knowledge just isnt up to it. Actually my knowledge stretches to about changing the stereo and the oil then Im done lol!! Think what hes hoping is he can find the parts then pay someone to do the work at a price thats less than replacing the engine / buying new car. Its such a shame its just sat on his drive at the minute and such a good looking car too. Pretty sure its still being paid for too hence the not wanting to just sack it off.

You might be able to get a full second hand engine from one thats been a writeoff. That would possibly be cheaper than either rebuilding or a new car.

Yep, buy the whole care and sell the rest of the car for parts over time if you have the space?

Then you could have a spare engine to rebuild over time and sell for parts too...
