Quick idea from anyone.
I took a quick trip down to County Hall today to hand in some paper work on the way the car suddenly started to want to idle at 1500rpm, then on the way to work its fluxing from 1500-2000rpm. Normally it sits at 880-900.
Any ideas on what this could be?
MFA?
Dodgy Sensor?
Locked Auto-Choke?
This is on the Golf Mk2 GTi Digifant 1990.
Aint got any time till Monday to work on it, but it should still be fine to drive back and forth to work 10 miles a day?
When was it last MOTd & when is the MOT due?
Liam
for a 1990 car its probably going to be something small/daft and easy to fix.... jut poke around till you find something that doesnt look right and fiddle with it ;)
(no silly over the top electrics to worry about!)
idle control valve probably
my rover 414 always idles at 1500 - 2000. Been like that for 2 years!
dunno what the engine is in that but if its EFI its probably a dirty idle air control valve

That would answer itself since they need to be renewed annually, anyway i think your thinking of a service.

I would never pay for a garage to do work, learn by doing, learn by doing :)
Cheers for the input, I will take a look at the Idle Control Valve on Monday then, clean it all up and clean the throttle body as well :)
could be the choke idle waxstat, was common on vws of that time.

Should be a screw or something you can adjust it with, right?
A petrol car will only idle up if air is bypassing the throttle plate.
So you either have a vacuum leak, or the idle actuator (If motronic) is stuck open
Check all vacuum hoses are on first of all, then check operation of the idle actuator

Yeah its a screw inside the injector unit I think, going to strip it down on Monday and clean it all out :)
Stripped it down and flushed it with a lot of WD40, seems to be working a bit better now and not getting crazy jumps with a bit of tweaking of the idle screw. Going to strip it before bed and leave it soaked over night to loosen anymore dirt :)
Do they run early motronic with the big stepper motor
Once youve experienced Plusgas, youll not go back to WD40.

Aye, then plugged into the VDO system. They are 110 brand new from Euro Car Parts, but Im just going to find a second hand one :)
if its motronic ML4.1 or MP1.3 vauxhalls and peugeots used it too
