I looked at importing a moanaro from OZ ages ago but once I had putting shipping, import duty and DVLA fees ontop it was the same price as buying one new at the vauxhall dealer.  I have never imported from Japan however http://www.daitoku.co.uk/72555/midlands.htm speacialise in importing Japanease cars, (midlands based) might be worth giving them a ring.

have a look around for a importing specialist dealer. they might have one on the forecourt, and if not they will be able to find you one and deal with all the difficulties.

yea... they start at £6k for somthing that can be picked up for £2.5k FOB or £3.5k at a port auction. - These things aint new, they was only made in 1990/91 & only about 20,000 of them was made.
Even on Ebay they go for more than £5k

UK Brokers are to expensive. Theres plenty of Jap companies who do all the work for you. Why use a middleman, whos probably going through the same 3rd party

Got whatever the company provides me to drive the other 35k I do

Ive been looking for  a classic/kit car for a few weeks.
Mini Moke was top of my list, but they arent really practical except for about 2 weeks of the year

i think they are cool little things but i would not be seen driving one. for that sort of money id get a Copen, but still wouldnt be 100% happy driving that.

Proper womens cars, they even look like shoes.

edit:

you would be lucky to get a frog eye for that money.

Not really, one of the local garages is owned by a classic car nut, and he had one sat on the side of the road for about that price.  hes got a newer Sprite there at the moment, and thats goign for £5k, not a frog eye, but still pretty.

*sigh*
this wasnt a what car shall i get thread.. it was asking if anyone has had experience in importing one themselves.

I wont get a classic simply because 1) over priced 2) parts are hard to come by & 3)I couldnt trust the reliability.

those fageros are kinda cool. if your gay.

they have a cool interior which most likely will kill you in a head on collision.

I just want somthing thats fun, cheap to run as a 2nd car (ie insurance, tax, fuel) & somthing I can throw around the mountain & coastal roads.

I kind of like the Modern day Retro looking Cars.. Chrysler Cruiser, Doddge Caliber, etc

agree on the yank front. I have an 86 firebird SE that I (Stupidly) bought back, and build is VERY poor.
