Title: Lowered my car on Coilovers
Post by: chrisdicko on August 02, 2006, 12:42:29 PM
Recently got some Weitec Coilovers on my ST.  The handling was already great, but now it is superb! It is very low, but have not had one problem over speed bumps or pot holes etc (my road is pot hole city)!

Sorry about the dirty car!

Do you find that youve restricted your turning circle now ?

No everything is still the same, except tons better handling.

For the plate, I was trying to get the stripes to run through the plate if you get me, but doesnt really work too well.

Hopefully Envy performance will email me back today about my lowering & strut-braces :)

Are you getting coilovers? Or just springs?

I thought of getting a strut brace.....but would you really notice the difference?
Title: Re:Lowered my car on Coilovers
Post by: snellgrove on August 02, 2006, 20:08:21 PM
Just springs - ill add aftermarket dampers if I need to

but everyone whos experimented with this sort of thing has said that theres not much point on ~Ã,£500 worth of coilovers, you wont notice much difference over the springs.

I am getting fron and rear strut-bracing just to stiffen the car up and make things a little tighter. Wont make a massive difference, but they arent expensive... so I might as well :)

after that I may have a looksie at stiffer ARBs.. depends how well it corners really.

no reply yet :( have nearly bought some new mats though, with big TSport badges on them, they look very cool :D

impulsive of me, but they were reduced down to Ã,£25 from Ã,£50 :)

Look good! I paid Ã,£60 for my mats......and dont look as good as that

Some people on the ST forum have gone from standrard springs --> Eibach Springs (for example) --> then coilvers and said they do make a big difference from uprated springs to coilovers. Could just be our car though, other cars will take things differently. So I just thought Id take the big leap to coilovers.

Cheers Ni :)

No one will be able to tell without before and afters.....but I dont have close up befores, but ive had all the grills and fog light surrounds painted black as well instead of the grey which originally comes with it....and that looks tons better as well.

Lol @ Snell.

Only changing the springs is only marginally less pikey that cutting the stock ones down.

Do it properly, or dont bother.

Well as I have said quite a few times,

if I am not happy with it after that, I can add dampers easily enough :)

just finished the order, bits will be through next week sometime :)

Parts arrive next week sometime, will have to arrange fitment.

Can do the struts myself easy, but I wont attempt the springs.

Also need to get the suspension geometry checked, as lowering a car throws all the alignment out I believe? - wonder if its best to bed in for a few weeks or have it done as soon as they are fitted.. :?

Now I gotta tell the ins. company (up to Ã,£1500 worth of this kind of upgrade = Ã,£0 on the premium :D apart from Ã,£25 admin fee. Do like the company I am with sometimes :D )

viper stripes, NOS strickers & LEDS and an aluminium wing next, for another 30bhp

Hmmm I found this on parkers..

bodyrolltastic :o its not even funny.

i do like my cars to handle well, but im not gonna bother with any springs or anything, cause ive got the big heavy diesel lump at the front and that just naffs everything up
Title: Re:Lowered my car on Coilovers
Post by: chrisdicko on August 04, 2006, 13:32:05 PM
Why would it naff things up mate? As you can get specific diesel springs which compensate for the weight of the diesel engine.

because all that weight in the front will make it understeer like a biatch no matter what you do

you can fix it. you just have to get a better car

Thats one reason I love my C2 GT.  They got the handling spot on.  It corners like its on rails.  A bit stiff over speed bumps and pot holes but I try to avoid them as much as I can :)
Title: Lowered my car on Coilovers
Post by: Jaimz on August 05, 2006, 13:10:49 PM
Yeah the C2 handles gorgeously even in 1.1 guise. Kris do you find that occasionally the rear end skips out (say on a surface change) while cornering?!?

Love the ST mate, but personally would go for a C2 VTS.

No, it stays glued to the road.  Only thing, should tyres last longer than 2 years on the front? :D

Depends how many miles you do in 2 years?!

and it also depends on what type of driving...

I am going to try for an airfield day in september, take a fair bit of rubber off the fronts

22K miles since new, so thats how much they have done.  I do often go faster than I should around corners because its so much fun to do in the GT :)

I dont know - the body weighs virtually nothing. The chassis is most of the weight, and even the brake (disc) is inboard and sprung. The suspension basically consists of long trailing arms connected by springs to the chassis and provide the characteristic body roll and soft ride.

Its actually pretty clever for the age of it!

my zs handles beautifully even with a heavy oil burner in the front, and a inormous boot on the back. havent had a hint of understeer yet, even in the wet, havent been pushing it too much yet tho, but it great on the twisties. Roads that i would have taken at about 45 in the megane are being delt with at 65+ in the Zed.

not getting as many mpgs tho  :?

sounds like the activa. getting about 20mpg now on the bigger turbo, but in its defence i did outcorner a 330 so badly he spun off trying to keep up!
