Title: Mates Escort Van ECU knackered
Post by: chrisdicko on December 20, 2007, 22:43:29 PM
My friend has an Escort van, which he desperately needs as he has just gone self employed. But its knackered. He said he needs a new ECU for it. Now, im not sure how he has come to this conclusion, as he doesnt have a clue about cars, so im guessing a mechanic has said this to him.
His dad was suppose to be sorting it all out, but is really really lazy and hasnt bothered! Could he get a 2nd hand ECU from a scrap yard, and fit it himself?? Or is there a lot more involved etc? I dont really have a clue either, so that solution might sound stupid........

need matching key for the ford ones I think (To avoid dealer expense). What age is it?

Needs a new ECU is modern mechanic (ie fitter) speak for I cant tell what is wrong with it by plugging it in to my laptop, so Ill take a wild stab in the dark rather than using any real diagnostic skill

How do you match the key mate?? Im not 100% on the age, its something like a 1997 I think.

Just been reading on replacing ecus on other cars, and it seems you just unscrew and unplug them.....then fit new one........is it that easy? Other than the matching key thing?

Cheers

anything without a coded key/transponder key yes its that easy

Ford have been using those transponder keys for years though - not sure of the procedure for changing one of that age

I thought the 1800 diesels of that vintage were mechanical injection in which case the key will be coded to an immobiliser rather than an ecu

So hopefully it will be coded to the immobiliser then.

But if its coded to the ecu, does that mean a trip to a garage to get it sorted?

If its mechanical injection he wont need an ecu, as it wont have one

if its the (crap) 1800 diesel then it should be the same as my mothers fiesta ?

in which case, its deffo. mechanical injection, and theres no ECU, and the key code thing is linked to an immobiliser inside the fuel pump

... Im not 100% on the key code thing... but Im pretty sure its the same as the transit system where I know for sure its inside the fuel pump... tho its just a module that fits into the back of it, and changing it isnt a big deal :)

lol  :whoops:  I see mark.

Erm, im not totally sure on the age. Ive text him, but he must be asleep. It is quite old though........So chances are then doesnt have an ECU    Good old mechanic!

Think I will have to speak to him again TBH, and find for deffo what the problem is. As he did tell me he needed a new ECU.....but its looking as if he doesnt.

Pain in the ass, having to code two keys when you do a master - pissing about with putting master in, turning to on, put another in within 5 seconds, etc etc

did he say anything else about it at all ?

older diesels are a piece of cake to diagnose 99% of the time.... with a list of symptoms and a few questions we could prob figure it out for you ;)

Ill go ahead and pre-empt is and say its, old battery, heater plugs, or the starter motor :p

:whoops:  :whoops:  :whoops:  :whoops:  :whoops:  :whoops:  :whoops:

Right, youll have to excuse my STUPIDNESS.........  :whoops:  :whoops:  :whoops:

Its a Vauxhall Astra Van on an X Reg. He took it to the Vauxhall Garage, and they plugged it in, and said it was the ECU. And would cost £700 for a new one. So he told them where to go, and got someone else to look at it whose an electrician..........and he said it was some wiring between a solenoid. But the guy said hed fix it now CBA. But he did say thats why the Vaux technician said it was the ECU, because of this wire!

Hope that makes sense........

lol, kinda different then....

my brother used to have an diesel x reg Astra car... deffo has an ECU :)

but if its a wire to a solenoid, then it can pretty much only be the wire to the fuel solenoid.... itll be in/on the fuel pump and probably just has one wire going to it...

you should be able to here it make a tick noise as you turn the ignition on...  try putting 12v+ve to it and see if it does it then.....

then if it ticks with the temp. wire, but not by the ignition then its the wire....

trace it back as far as you can and replace it ;)

edit. it must be the fuel solenoid.... its the only one i can think of... unless the engine doesnt spin at all and the elecy. means the solenoid on the startermotor... but thats the B thing I cant spell.. :o

im not sure whats happening in that sense mate. But will ask him tomorrow.

When he was telling me on the phone what was wrong, tbh it doesnt sound too hard. I have no experience of working on cars......but tracing wiring etc will be the same anywhere tbh.
