Youre not worried about any long term damage? I would be concerned seeing how exposed it seems to have been.

Seems to have been dropped at some point but its just a steel box section frame with an engine bolted on and 2 wheels, not all that much to go wrong. Ill be giving it a very close inspection when i strip it down anyway.

Really? awesome! A shame the swing arm and frame around the front of the engine dont appear to be, brown oozing out of them

Well i thought that was too good to be true, unless in 89 aluminium contained iron then its not an aluminium frame, the magnet never lies

I thought just the 400 was?

were def loads of them aluminium, they were designed for the YZR500 in the early 1980s and were always alu in those.

My experience is mostly with the racers, but there were def alu deltabox road frames.

Started work on it today. Wanted to check the engine turns smoothly.

Started with some vandalism, cut the chain off with a hacksaw and drilled the lock out of the petrol cap.

Good news though, engine and transmission turn smoothly so all looks good, going to get some carbs on it and run it up before stripping it all down and tidying it up.

Some random pictures:

Tried to get the engine running today.

Was bodge tastic as well.

Got a set of carbs during the week so slapped them on.

Had to rip the alarm out and repair the loom, was a bit of a mess.

My first bodge was to fill with car oil rather than specific bike oil, its not going to be in for long and i didnt have any bike oil.

Then i found i didnt have any fuel hose spare, so some water hose off the back of a washing machine was slapped on.

Found the kill switch was busted so wasnt going to run, quick bypass to fix that, found the throttle cables frayed and rusted to so another thing that will need replacing.

So carbs on, fuel connected and all the electrics looked good. Didnt have a battery to fit so spare car battery and jump leads snapped on, cranked over and over.. its not fired at all though. Plugs look terrible but wet so theres fuel, i checked spark and its weak on 2. Going to replace the coil pack as its non standard anyway.

Not sure if the stale fuel is helping matters either, might try some easy start. Still it was good to get it turning over.

considering it has been in a lake or something and sat outside for ages rusting away etc the inner workings look in pretty good shape considering and it looks like you will get it as new with not a massive amount of headache really when you think what it could be. I think you got a bargin in the works.

Yeah i could go the really cheap route and go with the street fighter look, wouldnt take much once the engine is running but im going to do a proper job and clean it right up.

have you jetted the carbs correctly yet? Id treat them to a dynojet kit

no, tbh i dont know anything about carbs, they came off a running bike so just slapped em straight on to get it started

You actually paid money for that?

Yeah, and IMO (which is the only one that counts) it wasnt bad, especially when people are trying to sell half an engine for the same money on ebay.

Dynojet kit looks like a plan, ill get one when the bike is going back together, around £120 though.

Theyre a good job. Are the carbs you got from an identical model?

Great stuff today! Got the engine running!

Changed the coils over as i wasnt getting much spark or any from one

After some messing about it fired up despite the stale fuel. It died straight away but some messing about with choke and idle speed it started and ran fine, very happy with that! Obviously didnt run it long as theres no cooling system on it but enough for me to be happy itll be ok.

So started the strip down:

Nice! Itll be good as new in no time...

my bike developed a problem today, the clutch wont disengage so it just stall when you put in gear. Im thinking slave cylinder.

Take everything off, clean them up, repair what needs to be repaired and a fresh coat of paint
