Need to get a new car next week as my fleet car goes back on Monday. I want something as green as possible - ie as high MPG as is realistic. What cars have silly MPG but are still reasonably priced? Looking for a small hatch really like a Corsa or Almera size.
Something along the line of a diesel Polo perhaps? First small car that comes to mind when I think high mpg.

The 1.4 TDi 75PS of the current model for example....
Urban 47.9mpg - 5.9l/100km
Extra-urban 68.9mpg - 4.1l/100km
Combined 60.1mpg - 4.7l/100km
Even the 1.9 Tdi 130PS does just as well.... with which you get a very decent 0-60 of 9.2secs.
Urban 39.8mpg - 7.1l/100km
Extra-urban 62.8mpg - 4.5l/100km
Combined 52.3mpg - 5.4l/100km
Here is a usefull tool to help you narrow down your choices a bit....

Without going totally electric...these are some of the greenest.
Toyota Prius 1.5 petrol-electric hybrid
Smart car 0.7 petrol
Citroen C2 1.4 diesel
Next level...
Fiat Panda 1.2 petrol
Ford Ka 1.3 petrol
VW Golf 1.9 TDI diesel
Jaguar X-type 2.0 diesel saloon
My only problem with that list is the prius. Its not as green as it should be for what it is and a joke of a solution to this being green issue with a starting price tag of Ã,£17K.
2ltDiesel TwinTurbo Jag..... same mpg as the a number of _green_ cars as i recall
I nearly fired up FF and looked for Green coloured cars :whoops:
Something less than 1.0 the Aygo or something similar?/
the 1.4 3 Cyl TDI polo.. yeah high MPG but hell to drive and TOTALLY gutless. i know as i have one for work :(
I couldnt care less about speed or looks. Cars are a money pit as far as I am concerned.
Those ones you posted dogbert have zero car tax too now.
Diesel Lupo,
Toyota Yaris D-4D.
Apparently, the D-4D is supposed to be one of the most economical in its class.
Have you seen the MPG on a 1.4 Diesel C2? Thats unbelievable.
But it will fall apart if you hit a small pothole.
I also seem to recall the yaris has 20k service intervals too.
But dont hold me to that.

More expensive tho. I could get a s/h c2 for Ã,£5000.
That is a good point.
Lynz was looking for a D-4D Yaris, but they are very hard to get for a good price. The closest she got was a 52 plate, 11k miles for Ã,£8k (T3 Spec)
Bank wouldnt give her the money though, so shes waiting to get the Justy back and selling it.

the polo is damn near undriveable its so bad lol
Since the cost of ownership is your main concern, you want to consider the potential for depreciation rather more than the initial buying cost imho; that would account for certain cars being more expensive s/h.
If youre looking for high mpg - especially city mpg dont believe the lies that VAG tell - their engines do good mpg on paper because top gear is ludicrously high. Around town theyre rubbish compared to most other diesels. Top gear is virtually unusable unless youre going at a decent speed.
The new C1 diesel is going to do over 100mpg - but it might be a bit on the small side.
Im only overseas every few years, so Im not as familiar with the market as I should be, but if its as I remember: want an "adult feeling" tiny car? Go polo/lupo. Want utter reliability, and great resale: Toyota Yaris. We have a VW, and its great, but Toyotas build quality when it comes to long term reliability blows European makers out of the water, at the expense of a little panache.
Aye the VW build quality is very good these days, and the inside of the car is a nice place to be with quality materials inside. The inside is more important to me than outside looks.
I spend a lot time in a new VW Caddy Van which practially is the same cabin s the polo/golf and it is a very nice place to be.
They are not the bargain of the century cars but they are very good value these days and they hold their value well.
Rover 25 2.0litre Diesel.
115hp so pretty nippy
51mpg
Tax Band A
Low Insurance
Get a nice one for subÃ,£3000 so not much money to lose
some very nice trim levels available, all the extras etc.

Can you haggle for a flat cap, terrier, stick and tartan blanket in the price too?
If you do go VW, dont even think about having any work done at a dealership. VW sellers are evil the world over.
