If youre looking for high mpg - especially city mpg dont believe the lies that VAG tell - their engines do good mpg on paper because top gear is ludicrously high. Around town theyre rubbish compared to most other diesels. Top gear is virtually unusable unless youre going at a decent speed.

The new C1 diesel is going to do over 100mpg - but it might be a bit on the small side.

Im only overseas every few years, so Im not as familiar with the market as I should be, but if its as I remember: want an "adult feeling" tiny car? Go polo/lupo. Want utter reliability, and great resale: Toyota Yaris. We have a VW, and its great, but Toyotas build quality when it comes to long term reliability blows European makers out of the water, at the expense of a little panache.

Aye the VW build quality is very good these days, and the inside of the car is a nice place to be with quality materials inside.  The inside is more important to me than outside looks.

I spend a lot time in a new VW Caddy Van which practially is the same cabin s the polo/golf and it is a very nice place to be.

They are not the bargain of the century cars but they are very good value these days and they hold their value well.

Can you haggle for a flat cap, terrier, stick and tartan blanket in the price too?

If you do go VW, dont  even think about having any work done at a dealership. VW sellers are evil the world over.
