Title: New Pope!
Post by: soopahfly on March 28, 2009, 08:30:58 AM
What causes white smoke to come pouring out of my exhaust, first thing in the morning when im at tickover.
I have to keep my foot planted to keep the engine alive :(

This is on the Delica.

Sounds to me like the heater plugs may not be warming the engine up enough.  My old Taxi used to do that every time you started the engine.  As did the 2.5 L200 I used to have from work.  From cold It isnt all that unusual to have some smoke at startup on a diesel.

Could also be a problem with the fuel mixture.

New ADL Blueprint plugs in December, but they are still using the old alu bus bar.

Possible headgasket waterleak (coolant) and as engine heats up leak will close ? You could try pour-into-radiator-sealant to see if it stops.

Its lumpy when you first start it, but it starts on the button.
Gets a bit down the road, white smoke pours out and it starts to die.  Give it a few minutes with some revs and its fine.

sounds like bad cold combustion, a quick google seems that non-mitsubish glow plugs are crap.
Also check the busbar, wiring and relay.

Also a few mentions of waste gate stuck on the turbo so over fueling.

Yeah the non Mitsubishi are crap, but the Mitsubishi ones are[/b] ADL-Blueprint ones.

Could possibly be bad spray pattern on the injectors, but I ran a higher concentrate than recommended though the system and it didnt help.

Already had the wastegate stripped down and re-assembled, so thats OK, and I even added a couple of washers for prosperity :D

sounds like giving the busbar and connections a clean up is the easiest thing to do then, after that seems injectors could need a recon/replacement.

As I thought it can be water causing it or glowplugs but as they are new ....

QuoteWhite smoke from a diesel engine colud be normal when it is very humid and cold, the engine is cold, the glow plugs are not working to their full potentialas long as the white smokeis not excessive. It also could be an indication of a head gasket sealing problem. Most will not leak after running a while, due to extreme cylinder pressure. After the engine rests with cumbustion pressure in the coolant system, the coolant can work its way back into the cylinders through the failing gasket sealing surface. If this happens and causes a hydrolock condition. Combine that with a high torque diesel starter and you may need a rebuild or possbly a new engine assembly. So make sure that your coolant level is full, and is not dark in color or smells like diesel exhaust (smells like a wierd spice in the coolant, almost like someone put black pepper and gunpowder in it.

Answer 2

White smoke is from unburnt fuel or moisture in the combustion chamber.

Doesnt have any other symptoms of HG failure, its not loosing water, and it doesnt smell funny.
Its not down on power either, nor does it overheat.

I know theres an issue with fuel pump seals on these, but this can also be the fuel filter.
Ive got a new fuel filter to try, but Ill let the garage have that when they give it a once over on Wednesday.

white smoke at startup = unburnt diesel....

which probably means the cold start it dead... diesel cold start just advances the timing slightly so the diesel is injected a little sooner...

can you see the choke anywhere ?  it will probably be a cylinder with a cable coming out of it - the cylinder will be probably be fixed to the housing that holds your thermostat, and the other end of the cable should go to your fuel pump....  (start at the fuel pump end looking for the wire and work back wards)

its a lot of probablys.... but I don;t really know the system on the delica :-0
