I used to have a pair of these, but they dont have them in my size. NOS going for $30 :rage: Perhaps the 47 with paper in the toes? Id gladly go back to clips and straps with the right shoes.

why in gods name would you want to do that?
Slot cleats have a distinct positive and secure feel that no clipless system can match. Big cleats like Look come close, but no cigar. Match them with a later model 105 or Ultegra platform pedal, and its as comfortable as youll ever get. Clipless is certainly always better off the road, but on road, slot cleats still rock--when properly set up. The whole "numb toes" and other strap issues are mostly bogus. I always used Christophe leather straps with just enough looseness to pull out when needed, but kept me in on all but the most insane mashing. Only time Id snug down is if I was doing some sprinting intervals.
Cycling has only become a little easier to wrap your brain around in the last 15 years with most of the voodoo washed away. I dont miss natural chamois shorts, for example, but I currently ride a 25 y/0 plastic shelled leather saddle thats far superior to any of these wacky new designs.

straps, for me were a nightmare, OK for track, in fact brilliant for track, but for road racing and triathlon, you can get bent! NO SIR! this forumista is not for turning....
Look/SPD-R pedals are good - ive got a pair on my roadie, again great for track, but a nightmare on road - i struggle sometimes to find the pedal with the cleat...
I ride bog standard Wellgo 800 (http://www.mtbr.com/reviews/olderpedals/product_22443.shtml)s right now on the road bike, as with the springs tugged tight and stiff Lake shoes with the velcro flap cut off, leaving me traditional laces. Easy as hell to rebuild yearly, easy to step into, no noise with a drop of lube before you ride, and never a pullout. Its funny, I get asked by roadies all the time at the local wetlands path which pedals to get as X pedal is driving them nuts. Almost always a $100+ pedal. I just tell to try a $50 Shimano M535 or $35 Wellgo 800. Yeah, theyre mtb pedals, but who gives a crap. :P
Road pedals are mostly bogus, the only thing I might want at some point is a pedal where I can lock out float, as it can feel a bit ponderous when doing poop-your-pants intervals. I do sorta like the Looks feel, but theyre annoyingly noisy, the cleats are damnation to walk on, and wear out fast. Gimme cheap and cheerful spd any day.

After nearly a thousand miles on the f**kers, i can say with some certainty they are bloody lethal at traffic lights when you have clipped out, if you dont find the pedal when trying to clip back in you can slip, which results in you "cracking your tea and sugar on the crossbar" - they really are quite dangerous to be honest in that respect. They are also a b*stard to walk in, as you say...
i have these on my on-one SSer and they rock:

they dont clog with mud due to their design and theyre light and very durable... cheap too, Ã,£20-25 quid off EBAY.
I prefer plain old style pedals due to that, you can use either side without the problem, straps are useful to keep your feet on the pedals but I have never found them absoloutely necessary.
Dont think anything will be getting me to change out of my SPDs for a long time, I find myself using them even for 1 minute trips to the shops now :D
What about some Egg Beaters/Candy/Smarties?
I heard nasty stories, not being able to unclip in time etc. The play in SPDs compared to looks etc doesnt bother me as Im not after any medals and theyre easy as pie to get spares for cheaply.

i dont see whats wrong with normal pedals and trainers they work just as good

For anyone doing a shortish daily cycle to work and back or leisure riding it hardly matters and kinkys right in this respect, for anyone doing competitive sports a foot slipping off a pedal can mean loosing a race so she would be wrong there.
:panic:

she made an uninformed comment - she said they work just as good - they dont, not for a commute or a race.
The whole point of SPD, is that it increases the power per stoke, because the foot doesnt move and you get power on the upstroke to an extent, as well as the down stroke... theres more to it than that, but its a wooly explanation. in short - theyre much, much better than trainers and normal pedals.
id never commute without SPDs - they improve pedalling efficieny and i (despite being widly against them) have finally found some cannondale shoes which actually look good and work both on and off the bike.
If you dont need or dont see the benefit of SPDs, you dont ride enough to appreciate the difference.
People will always be against them for medical reasons, but on the whole they are brilliant.
No, dont you see youve got it all wrong!
