Title: Over heating??
Post by: mr_roll on August 19, 2009, 23:22:27 PM
My Beemer is over heating.

Seems when its warm outside however.

I have driven down to Cornwall and back again and it only over heated in traffic.

I think one of the oil breather pipes is blocked (oil coming from the oil cap) how do I identify oil breather pipes?

The water pump is definately working.

The temp guage has never worked properly, its always been on cold since Knighty got the new engine installed. But recently this has just been going to max temp at random points.

How can I tell if the guage is still faulty and just giving a hot reading?

Knighty, what you up to this weekend? want to get your hands dirty with me?

overheating in traffic - fan faulty (viscous on those isnt it)

The fan is chained to the engine so it turns at what ever speed the engine turns at.

Is it not viscous? It decouples depending on temperature. I thought nearly all those BMWs had a viscous fan.

must be old if its a fixed fan

Nope, always spins. Knighty set it up like that iirc.

I might be mistaken, but im 99.9% sure its always spun when I turn the engine on.

Ill double check that.

for the temp sender, you will need to measure the voltage it is giving out at different temperatures.

You will need to find out its normal operating range, so you can test the guage properly, by sending it full (which may be 5v or 12v, or indeed it may be ground, dont know what sensors they use)

Itll always spin, but it only goes at full speed when its hot(if its working that is).

Hmm, I dont think it does that... Ill have to do some experimentation.

Its like an electric fan, only it spins slowly till the engine gets up to temp then it spins fast, and you should hear it like an electric fan.

it is a viscous fan - you can stick your finger in it and stop it when the engine is cold....

iirc, theres 2 tempreture sensors on the engine, one for the ecu to use and one for the dash... could be worth swaping the wires over and seeing what happens... (will narrow it down anyway)

weekend sounds good to me... what day ?  does the engine still need steam claeaning ? (steam cleaner is fixed now)
