Title: Parts - surcharges?
Post by: Pete on October 04, 2007, 17:56:27 PM
How od they work?

If a part is £75 and has a £35 surcharge do I pay £110 and then get £35 back when I take the old part in, or do I pay £75 and then get £35 back when I take the old bit back?

you pay 110 and get 35 back when you bring in the old part

if its a starter, dont even bother - get it reconditioned for about 30 quid, at any auto electric place.

Its a brake caliper.

Gonna try some copper grease on the piston tomorrow - its seized.

cinquecento, punto, uno, panda - what is it with them and their seizing brake calipers

anyway - that price seems more than a little extortionate - you can get fancy calipers for less than that.

copper grease is not for the piston, you should only use brake fluid to try and free a piston.
If your not sure I would get the exchange caliper, other oils and greases will attack the seals.

I stripped one side down today. Nightmare cos the manual made me try undoing a 10mm bolt for half hour when I didnt even need to.

Bah.

Long story short, its the handbrake lever bit at the back of the caliper thats sticking, it doesnt come off when you release the hb. Queue lots of hammer time and wd40 and its moving freely now, gotta grease it up tomorrow and order new pads (they crumbled when I pulled them out   )

Those bolts are an absolute nightmare, the number of times Ive had people down to help me/taken it to the garage to try and remove bolts or ended up with sheared bolts is crazy, thank god most of them at the front have been replaced now. I got charged an hours labour for a mechanic to whip out the blowtorch and wrestle them out - I couldnt even fit my front grill they were so problematic.

/end bolt rant.

What pads you using sdp? Im on EBC kevlars, quite like them now.

seized bolts -

My technique is hammer + spanner. works 9/10. Its like theyve been welded on tho. 120lb/ft mini hub nuts are a walk in the park by comparison. I think theyve been glued on.

Im hoping the new pads will go on without me having to touch them....

Pads - I went down to halfords to see if I could get some

Me: I need some pads.

Halfords: Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh my brain hurts.

Me: There arent any on the shelf. Got any out back?

Halfords: Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh my brian hurts.

Me: I just wondered how much they are...

Halfords: Eh?

Me: I just wondered how much they are...

Halfords: Eh?

Me: ...

Halfords: Eh?

Me: Forget it..

Halfords: Eh?

and so on.

/I was gonna go for the Mazda ones from mx5parts cos they come with the clips and stuff. Are the ebc ones dusty much?

Not if you dont consider an explosion in a plaster factory dusty, imo.

Hammer and spanner runs risk of shearing bolt, and stripping the head.

Cant say Ive noticed much, but tbh my alloys are filthy anyway and I dont know what Im looking for.

I get all my kit from www.mx5parts.co.uk pretty much, cant fault their service and prices.

Mark what pads would you recommend then? The way Im driving at the moment I think mine will need replacing come MOT time in Feb.

those mintex fast road pads are pretty good and not too dear. good bite off them.

I got them on today, I cooked the bits with the pins on the gas hob and they came off really easily.
