basically the bearings just gave up the ghost. what can i do? do i just get it fixed?

I doubt your pedals are worth rebuilding or even that its possible. Basic replacements are dirt cheap. You should be able to get some resin Wellgos for $10 or so. Remember that the left pedal has lefty threads: righty loosey.

If you want to spend a bit more, the alloy ones are less nasty looking.

As maxi says just ditch it and buy a replacement pair.

Or go and find a ditched bike and get them from that. Ive seen a couple of bike frames with the gearwheel and pedals still attached.

Seriously though, youre unlikely to get much cheaper than those ones.  Try ebay, might get some horrible ones for 99p or something...

Wellgo makes very decent pedals, although their lower end kit sometimes needs a bearing adjustment out of the box.

But if it was for my bike, Id get some classic MKS Touring Sylvans and clips. Sylvans are beautifully made in Japan and a pleasure to service, cheap too!

but i will look to invest in a set of spanners, fc9k, you are right there are plenty of potentials for spares kicking around. someone at uni even has teh same bike as me, but with better forks

im no pikey! i did however notice my mate has got a brand new hybrid, he didnt notice he has quick release wheels and forgot to lock them up untill i pointed it out.

Even with normal wheel nuts they will still try to steal them. If you are going to use a D lock get something to fasten the front wheel to the frame too. A sturdy metal cable and padlock would do nicely.
