Title: Petrol engine oil in a diesel engine
Post by: Clock'd 0Ne on March 23, 2009, 23:17:08 PM
Anything to stop me doing this? Whats the difference exactly? The viscocity or whatever seems the same so what makes them different, or is it marketing BS?

I need some more oil in my car and cba to spend money unneccessarily.

you could use it if you only need a small top up - but dont use a lot.... or you could use it if youre going to change the oil soon anyway....

how low is it ?  I could bring you a gallon down when I come ?  I got it in 45gal drums so its pretty cheap :-)

diesel oil has a load of detergent and anti foaming agents etc in it that petrol oil does not.

it also operates at totally different temperature.

do not use petrol oil.

Its a pity but theres nothing to stop you putting it in, plenty of reasons not to though. Get it drained down, all the fuel removed and clean the carb out. Then put new fuel in. With luck it might be OK.

Nice one, I dont fancy spending £15 on a couple of litres, but its virtually rock bottom.  :drama:

A bit off topic bu a good thing to do when changing oil in petrol or diesel cars is to drain all oil, put oilplugg back then fill with about 4 liters of diesel (where the oil is usually topped up), start engine until oil light dims and stopp, drain engine again and let it drain good and long, put oil plug back and fill with new oil (after oil filter is changed of course) and you will have a good and clean engine, stuck hydraulic valves will loosen etc. :)

Ive seen this listed before and I need to do the oil in my punto. Is it definitely a good idea?

Not sure about newer diesels, but I used to drop a couple of litres of Unleaded into my FX4 when I had it.  I used to drop a couple of litres in, then top it up with diesel.  Used to clean the system right out.  However that was an old Austin 2.5, and Im guessing that newer engines probably arent so forgiving.

No problem at all, modern oil is designed for petrol and diesel, its more harmful putting diesel specific oil in a petrol engine.

Diesel oil will clean older petrol engines a charm like an oil flush

Diesel specific oil is formulated for an environment with much higher temperatures and CR, and also with detergents because of the soot. No petrol specific oil has anti-foamer in it either.

Petrol specific oil in a diesel will get thicker far faster, and will sludge up. Even in an old diesel cement mixer I have an emergency usage of bog standard mineral oil that was forgotten about turned to sh*te.

Just pour it straight through with the sump open?

I would nut do it in a newer car but I have done it many times, I did it in my 96 TDI and in my Peugot 405 TDI.
I also did it in my friends VW van with a boxer and hydraulic lifters that car barely ran because of stuck lifters and after a dieselflush at oilchange in ran great.
