Title: Project - Metro fix up - lot of pics.
Post by: DEViANCE on October 17, 2009, 13:23:08 PM
My metro has fallen into a bad state while its been off the road so Im going to fix it up and get it back on the road.

Here is how it looks after a quick wash

It has a problem with letting water into the front footwells
(http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s81/robdav99/Metro%20Project/new/DSC01202.jpg)

So I stripped the interior to see what was up and the damage.

Its going to need some welding on the front jacking points but everywhere else looks ok.

The brakes looked nackered and they where too small for the power of the car anyway.

so I changed them for new MG TF units.

Thats as far as Ive got so far.

I want need to:

then I can move onto making it lighter/faster.

Get them steelies banded :D
Little bit of stretch/poke and then done.

Steelies are the new Alloys.

Find some 15" steelies, then you can get some man brakes behind there and keep it looking reasonably stock.
G60 wheels would look nice.

yeah wide steelies look cool.

All im going to do with mine is paint them, not sure what colour, probably gloss or matt black.

what a complete tool!

I cant fit the steelies on with those brakes!

Going to have to see what my options are now.

got the wheels on with 5mm spacers. Just need to get home abit early one day this week so I can take it to the garage to look at the welding.

which would be nice, if they were in fact g50 steelies and not mk3 steelies. you can tell the difference by the shape of the cutout.

i get the feeling from the thread that the metro is going to be a track weapon. good work but dont be putting skinny tyres on. if youve put tf brakes on then might tf alloys not be an option? can you also get tf suspention or does the hydragas cause issues?

I love selling at E38 just found a 7 slat Golf Mk2 grill that is perfect condition that Im going to sell and the scene tax on them are crazy!

Wide banded G60 steelies for the win I also like the Scirocco GT2 Steelies banded as well!

Off topic getting rid of my Golf as found some nasty underpan rot and got a Mk2 Jetta instead and sticking a nice 2.0 16v in that ;)

I like golfs and the like, but I dont see what the "Big Deal" is?

There nothing special, rare, or even especially fast about them.

RetroRides is better for buying, as ST is frowned upon.

Golf Mk1s are rare as hell these days (well when I say rare finding a rust free one) my brother just bought a Mk1 last week in black and dropping in a 2.0l 16v in it and its going to be a rapid little machine. One of the lads from the DubNorthEast club has a Mk1 that is a tad nuts with a G60 setup in and is scary fast.

Jettas are where its at in my eyes now :)

i think its just people realising they will never be able to afford a good car, so they just join a "scene" and kid themselves that they have a good car

Ive had 2 Mk1 GTis written off from under me ( a 1.6 and a 1.8 ).  Both times vans in the back at EXACTLY the same set of lights.  Nice cars for their day, but TBH they arent nice to drive by modern standards.  To be honest I had far more fun in the 2.0 GTE I got later on than in the 1.6.  The 1.8 was rather cool though.

A G60 MK1 golf wouldnt be scary fast - it would be nippy. Doesnt have a great deal of torque or power.

A modern warm hatch turbodiesel would walk all over it once rolling due to the bags of torque they now have.

The best hot hatch of that period, and possibly of all time is the Lotus Sunbeam.

Ive no idea what power the MR2 has yet, as Im waiting to get booked into a local RR, but its scary. I regret building it now as its useless in the wet, and you have to take a deep breath before you floor it.

The whole VW scene thing is marmite - to me its just standard cars, lowered on stupid small wheels with dangerous stretched tyres, with optional sticker on the rear window. Some people love it though - each to their own and all that.

The euro look is nothing new either - it has been around since the early 1980s. there were golfs lowered with small wheels then too in just about every edition of street machine magazine.

Euro look comes and goes in every scene really... Im not a fan of the whole stretched tyres (I find it scary that your leaving your self wide open for the tyre to come off the rim)

Naturally Jap power is always going to exceed that of any VW its just how Japs are.

I just enjoy having a car that have a good OEM look and a higher than stock surprise under the bonnet :)

Just like everyone on the forum I think we are all looking forward to the RR figures from the MR2.
