Title: RAC vs AA
Post by: Bacon on December 03, 2011, 20:37:38 PM
I was looking for Breakdown cover, Roadside and National Recovery, in the end i decided on AA, there were a number of reasons but after reading the following link:

http://www.rac.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?14007-RAC-breakdown-has-ruined-my-life&

I can't believe how bad their after sales/ customer service is, i don't know what i'd be doing if i was that man.

I get free breakdown cover with my banks advanced account, I pay £12pm and get other benefits as well (mobile/travel insurance, extended warrenties etc). might be worth a look.

Meh been with the RAC for years and have called on their services (flawlessly) many times. Fact is if you go digging you can find horror stories for any firm.

Didn't need to dig, 9/10 threads on their forums are complaints.

People don't post when they've had a good service though.

I used to work for both, for my own cover I went with the RAC, mainly as got a better deal for the family, and the AA don't attend if you have an accident( or they didn't).

One example I had with the AA, they recovered a customers fiesta diesel to my garage, was told the timing belt was snapped, after I talked to the customer he told me the patrol man asked him to try to start the engine while he was spraying something(easy start) into the air intake, the engine went bang! After I fitted a new head we sent the timing belt to the AA, as it had clearly snapped clean through, they sent it back saying the teeth had failed  After I'd done the job it wouldn't start, it was out of fuel :muttley:

Read the thread at the link in my OP or check the forums for yourself there is the odd good response but they are flooded with unanswered complaints.

The only issue I've had with the RAC is extortionate pricing and somehow putting completely the wrong details and someone elses name on my membership card

As far as the actual mechanics that come out though, they've all been pretty much faultless in their responses (bear in mind they've often overlooked the fact i'm running veg oil too).

Well Im with the RAC and the last couple of times I have needed them I have been left rather annoyed

They sub out most of the work to 3rd parties and it still takes forever, and when the steering is broken and you need recovery for a 4WD automatic and they send the usual lift the front wheels truck and a guy that takes one look and then calls his mate for a proper lorry its stupid.

I pulled off the isle of wight ferry with a failed power steering rack at 7pm in southampton, at 2am my car was being unloaded an hour away in Poole.. FFS what a joke.

Then i called them after an accident for recovery and was told id be charged despite the accident care written on my membership card.. jokers.
