Title: Refurbing alloys
Post by: mr_roll on September 30, 2008, 23:01:20 PM
Does anyone know the best way to refurb a set of alloys?

There is a little bit of curbing.

Im thinking sand down with a igh sanding paper and then reduce the grain to smooth over about 3 sands and then paint.

Whats the best paint to use on wheels? and just use sand paper you get from B&Q?

depends how deep the scoring is

you might need a skim of filler if its a real deep gouge

20 is a bit cheap tbh - places with a good rep are more like 50-80

The best paint comes out of a spray gun, wielded by a professional.

The worst kind of paint comes out of a rattle can, wielded by an amateur.

Right, finally got some pics.

1 wheel is particular bad but no gouges, just a lot of what looks crusted on mould.

So, how do people think I should proceed with refurbing these? I might be able to get to a sandblasting machine as my uncle has one in his workplace, but I dont know what sort of sand grain to use and Ive never used it before.

All the tyres are screwed on them and do need replacing too.

those need blasted back to what bare metal there is left, and skimmed with a filler and sprayed.

How do you do the skimming and what filler would be the best to use?

Do you know anything about blasting?

Ive done a little sand blasting in my time, and it takes absolutely forever as usually you can barely see what you are doing.  Its fine for doing little things, but doing wheels? Youd need to be very dedicated.
