Title: Rust and paint flaking
Post by: Clock'd 0Ne on June 03, 2006, 21:25:30 PM
I have a nasty rust problem escalating on the Clio:

Thats the flaking paint on my door, its going to get worse if I dont treat it.

This is the worst of the rusty bobbling around the arches, but there are also some bad spots and pok marks littered on the door, like vehicular acne.

Any suggestions on how to treat this, tidy it up and cover the areas white again, keeping costs to a minimum and bearning in mind Im a n00b? :)

Cheers in advance.

tbh, its not for expensive cars, or for anyone whos going to be out polishing there car every other week, but Im a big fan of whip out the angle grinder, make sure you remove all the rust, prime it, then paint it :)

youll find the rust spreads under the paint around the bubbled bits, so a little bubble could have a 2 inch patch of rust under the paint :o

Wet n dry it, spray over the area and then sell the car - it gets expensive if you ignore it.

Forget using an angle grinder on a clio  all you will end up with is a mess. Wet&dry is far more suitable then coat with an anti-rust primer and paint.

Do several thin layers of paint.

Make sure the paint matches or it will look awful. Check you do both sides of the wheel arch

naaa, angle greinder = the way forward !

best bet for painting it is to mask off around the area then just have an extra clean/white patch a couple of inches square where the rust was :-)

better than messing up trying to get it to match, especially if you aint had much practice :o

could always T-Cut and wax polish the whole car after, would look like a new car :o

(remember to give it a coat of primer before painting!)

Hmm this sounds like a days work :(

the wet n dry, primer then paint jobbie sounds good. Witrh the bobbling I dont think that stuff brummie recommended will do the trick.

Its just white, so any white paint should do, there cant be many shades?

What type of paint do I need, is it a special glossy type for cars? Will I find all this at Halfrauds?

"Just white"

Go to hallys, theyve got big books telling you which paint code to buy for which make/model/colour of car.  Theyll probably do cheap Halfords own stuff or more expensive stuff.  Just get whatevers cheapest tbh, probably outlast the rest of the car tbh.

There should be a VIN plate with the code on.

To be brutally honest, if you try and do it yourself it will look sh*te.

If i were you Id get a new door in the same colour, and have the arches done professionally.

You might save money now, but I bet it will look rubbish and stand out like a sore thumb.

Come the winter you will find the rust coming through your paint job as well.

It might be cheaper to pop down to halfords and buy, say, Ã,£30 of rust treater, wet & dry, undercoat, paint, lacquer, and rubbing compund...  But you will knock a few hundred off the resale value if you dont do a blinding job on it.

(its not that I dont trust your ability/patience - but bodywork is something that is REALLY difficult to get to look good).

Thats fair enough. For most cars it would matter.

I paid Ã,£450 for this though and I plan on running it to death, The cost of replacing around the door panels and arches isnt worth it.

In that case then, I wouldnt bother wasting money trying to keep the rust at bay; just leave it

Damn, you need Mexicans over there.

If your car looked like that around here, youd be offered a fix for $50 while you shopped at Wally World. When you left an hour later the thing would look as new. Ive had a hood realigned by Mexicans, Ill never go back to domestic fixes.

On the other hand, in these parts, white trailer trash does a much better job on tire repair. My favorite place for this is across the street from a porn and dildo store. Convenient!

Looking at the pic of the arch, I would say its beyond rubbing back and painting, they usually rust from the inside out due to crud buildup on the lip.

Chances are you could snap off that chunk with your fingers

Well Ive gone over it after using some rust treatment and sanding it down, the only bad patch was next to my rear wiper where a big hole had appeared underneath, filler soon sorted that out

The paint doesnt look quite right but T-cut and a colour restorer should fix it up. Only cost me about a tenner.
