an interesting concept dont you think, saves you having to attach silly racks to the back of your bike.

QuoteThe bicycle version of an SUV? Photographer Mike Hulsebus found a sort of grocery centaur--half Kroger shopping cart, half Schwinn--in front of his new house when he moved in. The unidentified man in the photograph (its not clear if this is Hulsebus himself) apparently had the same idea and made his own prototype, different from the version Hulsebus found in that the forks go outside the shopping cart frame, to level the bike off. If urban bike messengers get wind of this, perhaps Fed Ex will finally have some local competition.

those red tires of beacons for theft.

I was looking at a fixie the other day, not bad for £400. i am not particularly familiar with cycle manufacturers tho, recommendations?

funkychicken9000

Id really reccomend building one yourself / getting someone to build one for you.  The off-the-peg ones are ok, but youll find yourself lusting after a steel-framed custom one soon enough :D

If you really want a retail one, Id go for a Bianchi Pista

Bling blinging.  Other than that, the Fuji Track is f**king amazing value for money (youll need to add brakes to it though, same as the bianchi).  The lemond Fillmore also has a good rep, bit more pricey though.

Id steer clear of aluminium as they dont ride as nicely.  The Specialized Langster has a bad rep because theyre really taking the piss with their city-specific models and its a bit of a try-hard hipster kids bike.  All the noobs get them   Have a lol

[edit] Pop into http://www.londonfgss.com and say hi, youll get loads of advice there.  Nice bunch of people

Someone asked a similar q there: http://www.londonfgss.com/discussion/1069/production-bike-at-about-400/#Item_50

I want.... not the shopping cart bike, bit "omg how do I steer" for me. But I was on a bus home from bristol parkway last night and watching people cycle home. My god... I want my bike sorted out, and I want to ride so bad!

Think the first major thing I will buy with my first paycheck after a double bed, is put money away for a proper road bike.... none of this hybrid malarky! :)

i would build but logistical issues are quite a problem at the moment. perhaps when i have more time in the summer i will be able to learn, seeing as the Internet is a wonderful place to pick up information. I would be tempted to put brakes on because im not to sure about the whole backwards pressure thing yet, especially riding in urban areas where you have to ride like every car will pull out on you.

Riding without brakes in cities in my opinion is pretty iditiotic even if youve been riding fixed for years.  Youll definately want at least a front brake.  Fuji track is the way to go IMO, £265 is silly low for what you get.

Youll also want to budget for proper pedals (SPD, or at the very least clips and straps)

piratingpiratepirates

it said on the website it came with pedals/straps. brakes i can salvage from my old bike which died a horrible death (bottom bracket eventually, well worth the money imo).

that site is now favourated.

Unless your old brakes looked something like this youre going to need a new one - mountain bike brakes wont fit

The only bikes I ride are the town ones.... and every Town has one

You must get terrible saddle rash

piratingpiratepirates

interesting revelation. are they any better than my V brakes per chance?

i didnt see any lugs on the frame to mount some, would i have to ghetto weld a nut on?

funkychicken9000

V brakes wont fit.  Even if you tried to ghetto it, you might find the spacings are all on the piss.  And youd have ruined a £300 bike for the sake of a tenner.

Its got a hole drilled in the fork crown that you bolt a road-style calliper into.  This is what you want, although lots of places will do similar things cheaper which you could get instead if you were feeling like saving a bit of dollar.  As for a lever, Id go with something like this which is one of these after a lot of sanding + polishing

piratingpiratepirates

That looks quite nice. I wonder if i could get away with using the chrome dip at work.

funkychicken9000

ooh fancy.  can i post you some bars and a stem to do? In fact f**k it, Ill strip the whole frame down and you can sort me a bianchi-pista lookalike ;)
