Title: Sold the Mondeo on impulse today: Need a new ride
Post by: Bacon on April 01, 2009, 20:42:36 PM
So i woke up today, got the Mondeo cleaned for the first time in 2 years and auctioned it a few hours ago.

I have a budget of £1500 to spend on a new ride.

I am 6ft 8" tall, i would prefer something economical upto 1.6 petrol i would say, or would consider a diesel

Must have a good look, not make me look like a grandad (yes i know i had a Mondeo)

The only one i have thought of so far is a MK4 Astra 3 Door 1.6 16v

Insurance is ok, i have 8 or so years NCB and i am Fully Comp

BORING!

If you werent so bothered about engine size, you could have some fun on that budget.

Im reliably informed by an older gentleman with one of these, that they will return 30mpg if unprovoked.

bit less boring than most things around that budget, good engines, good on fuel and good to drive.

Considered those and the ZR, but i heard they blow head gaskets like crazy, and all sorts of other engine related horror stories.

Im with Deviance! Love the ZRs and ZSs. The headgasket issue was really only related to the 1.8 model of the K series engine they both used. I had the 1.4 model in my Rover 414 which had 125K on the clock and was still going 100% when I part exd it.

Only thing Id say isyou need to be small for the ZR - there isnt much room in the ones I test drove. They were damn fun to drive though and they looks the business if you keep em clean.

Decided to stay away from them as id more than likely go for a ZS then im limited to the 1.8 engine :P, shame i probably fit a ZR the 1.4 would have been great

the engine isnt as bad as people make out, esspecially if the head gasket has allready been repaired using the uprated/land rover gasket.

My metro as the 1.8 k-series and gets thrashed silly and runs perfectly.

What about a Honda Prelude?

Or a Honda Saloon, they do the Accord and theyre good on economy and cheapish to maintain.

Yeh accord i have considered also, i like japanese cars/engines, its just they dont pop up at auction all to often, and i doubt ill be buying private because people want ridiculous prices for motors, even though its a recession.

Rover 600 = Honda Accord but cheaper.

All the engines, except the 2.0 turbo and diesel are Hondas too.

Having done 200k miles total in both, I think the Mondeo TDCi 2.0 is a better engine than the 2.0 petrol; its more driveable on A/B roads despite the weight penalty. And you get an extra 100 miles out of a tank.

Seen a few more of these selling recently from 875-1200 for an 02 plate, ill be down auction on Monday, im close to giving up looking for a new car.

Shortlist

Golf GTI
Astra SXI / SRI / Sport

or

Mondeo TDCI

Depends if i want to save on fuel or not, i would really like a 3 door Astra overall but its so hard to find one round here.

Also looked at a Hyundai Coupe F2 Evo and shockingly a Ford Cougar xD but there are not in my shortlist :P

Go golf GTI if you can find a cheap MK4 1.8T. I wouldnt bother with the MK3 unless you go VR6 as there slow and feel very unpowered compared against the new models. I bought a 02 GTI 1.8T and im glad i did every time i drive it puts a grin on my face ! (Although saying that i did have a freelander before which was like driving a van).

I used to have an A4 B5 Turbo Sport, essentially its the same motor and i know how fun they can be  :mutley:

Really depends if i can find a 1.8T now
