Title: tyre fitters and alloy wheels
Post by: chaotic_uk on November 22, 2009, 00:08:08 AM
a few months ago i went and had a part worn tyre fitted at a well known place in our local area , when they had fitted it they used the lead weights than you put on using a hammer which i thought odd . yesterday i had to have both front wheels repainted due to this place damageing the paint , had to keep having the wheels resealed but ended up getting them redone . how come they did not use the stick on weights like they should on most alloys ?

You have to watch tyre fitting places like a hawk in my experience - even for things like fitting directional tyres on the wrong way.

Same here I have to loosen the nuts after they used their pneumatic machine to tighten the nuts way to hard.

Yeah this is horrifically bad practise, should be done up with a torque wrench, locking nuts removed with an impact wrench is another classic, can practically see the life being machined out of the things.

I get laughed at for torquing wheel nuts up properly - by my friends who are constantly ringing their wheel studs.

All makes are different, but about 110NM for a standard road car is typical.
