Title: Tyres.
Post by: Clock'd 0Ne on July 04, 2006, 20:43:57 PM
Im after cheap as chips for all four corners, possibly remoulds for my Clio as the grip is approaching the DANGER ZONE

Whats that nifty website Nige is always raving about for tyres? They deliver to your door and spoon feed you Ben & Jerrys on arrival or something else equally fabulous.

If you buy cheap tyres your grip will be worse. Try:

Check out my local Firestone, they will shoe the Daihatsu for 85 Condoleeza Conchs. Clios should be even cheaper.

 remoulds and hes complaining about low grip on real tyres...

nigey boy, dont scrimp on rubber for your car as they are the contact surfaces for the road. they let you stop in an emergency like fashion, they let you do everything safer in your car.

Ni was going on about http://www.blackcircles.co.uk by the way, also check out http://www.mytyres.co.uk

I doubt they will be that pricy for a clio - but it depends on what youre expecting, doesnt it :P I thought Ã,£40 (well, I think it was 36) per corner wasnt bad for my Yaris when I forked out for 4* Toyo T1-Rs

havent looked back though, the grip is FANTASTIC and I now feel confident in the car whereas before it felt somewhat nervewracking as the grip was possibly the lowest Ive ever experienced in a car.

bah, I have run le cheap tires on all my utility cars for years. No reason to piss away money on rubber for a city scoot. Get the cheapest non retread you can find.

I didnt think remoulds were actually any worse than standard for grip?  :?

Hmm. Well Snelly, its not so much complaining about grip, they are virtually bald on the outside and they have already been rotated around the car by an unknown previous owner

I literally cant afford decent grip tyres, Id like to throw some Blair Bullion at it but I need to fix an oil leak and really should service the damn thing too...

Basic, reasonable grip will do. As long as I have legal tread depth Im happy, as Im crossing the line there right now I think :o

Yeah, I didnt mean to come across as "buy sporty tyres, damnit!" I just dont really think remoulds and the like are the way to go.

I dunno if they are worse grip, but a friend had some and the comments were very  indeed. made out that they were the worst thing hed ever used.

I think a budgety/mid-range sort of thing is more than good enough :)

You can buy yourself some time with the oil leak depending on how bad it is...  buy topping it up all the time ;)  keeps the oil in the engine fresh anyway even though it can be expensive   but Id recommend doing the tyres ASAP because its 3 points on your license for every illegal tyre, wouldnt want officer plod catching you :o

My thoughts exactly Snell.

Im being told by relatives that are gearheads that remoulds are pretty much equal. That being said, for ease of mind Ill probably buy new. The leak isnt so bad as it appears to be a rusted sump causing the poblem, but you never know for sure  Im going to take it into the local garage at some point to resolve that and give it a minor service (oil filter, etc.) but for now the tyres are a definite priority.

oddly enough the cheapest place when i was buying a few months back was National.  got all 4 corners on the honda done for Ã,£110 all in.  Not the best tyres in the world, but its not a sportscar.

Have a look because they are still doing the buy 1 get one free.

Virtually every commercial airliner in existance has been fitted with remoulds as standard, if there was a problem with performance you would find it there first, there isnt a problem with them at all. They use the same rubber as a new tyre and check for damage before they start so what you get out is virtually a new tyre.

Youre not quite comparing like with like now are you there?  I could spit out a handful of crucial differences (composition, role of the wheels) but its late and im tired.

Well I think Im going to go with the Pirelli 2500 Euros. They arnt too cheap and seem ideal, about Ã,£100 inc delivery. I guess Ill have to live with it

my mother used to put remoulds on her car till she had a few suffer from tread separation, I personally would not touch em, shop around, when I had the Astra a set of new Toyo 330s could be got locally for Ã,£6 more per corner fitted than remoulds.

I would also steer clear of part worns, some are just due to legal tread depth diffs in Europe but other are puncture repairs. and the coating they use to make em look newish can hide faults.

Just got an email, ETA is 16/07 which is Sunday? Cant imagine them delivering on a Sunday, can anyone verify if this is likely?

QuoteDelivery
The normal delivery time for an existing order is 5 to 7 working days.

That doesnt categorically state that weekend deliveries are out of bounds though :?

Ah well. I might email them.

Congratulations to them for their inability to process the order with delivery address seperate from invoice address. Theyve only tried to deliver to the wrong house!

I hate this kind of incompetence.

edit: Now I cant even login to the site to view the order and their password recovery doesnt work :disappointed:

One more strike and they are out of the f***** game.

Mytyres.co.uk

more like Mytyressenttothewrongcountryandseperatedatbirth.co.uk

Theyve had a polite but harsh email, believe me. I wanted these fitted this weekend and I cant see that happening now with me having to leave it so late to book into the garage.

Last two tyres just arrived, God knows when Ill be able to get them fitted now though, I was hoping to get booked in somewhere for tomorrow, seems unlikely now...

Got them fitted finally. They seem pretty good on the corners, enough to allow me to scare Kinky poopless...

My tracking was out 4mm, is that a lot? It seemed just enough for me to notice it.

I dont consider tracking or "alignment" as its more commonly referred to stateside, to be much of a problem for the average family car if you cant feel it, it doesnt show a wierd wear pattern, or even cause noise and vibration. Sounds like you were a wee bit off, but none too bad.

nige id get the tracking sorted if i were you, itll only be Ã,£20 or Ã,£30 and I always think I can really feel the difference with the road holding after its done :)

plus... youll save a it of cash in the longer run because your new front tyres will last longer :)

I already had it done Alan, sorry to confuse you

I made sure they did it anyway and they told me after it was 4mm out of tracking previously, was an extra Ã,£25 quid, but well, doesnt matter now. I spent enough on the tyres to want it all spot on.  :-)

I should be going down to Birmingham this weekend to see my old mates, so that will be a good run for them to see how different it feels. Especially at speed.
