Title: Upgrading my sound system
Post by: PuNk on October 02, 2006, 13:34:23 PM
Im sick of the crap noise in my car, I want to upgrade, nothing spectacular low-mid range price. Atm ive just got two speakers, I want a small sub and some rear speakers just to clear the sound up a bit (bass is just none existent in my car).

What I was wondering is any recomendations for cheap places?
and do I need an amplifier now that ill be adding a sub and more speakers?

Complete noob btw, got a sparky friend whos coming round later to give some advice.

Motor-world.co.uk and caraudiodirect.

Both have bundles of sub/amp combos and speakers.

I wouldnt even bother with subs if youre not listening to music that doesnt require it. If your rear can accomodate a couple decent 6x9s, youre set to go. An inline amp can crisp up the sound and keep the head unit cooler, and if youre not running a sub, even a teeny 50w amp for just the rear deck can add the perfect boost. It depends on what you want to spend. I could put together a system for $200 with a satellite ready headunit, small amp, an four speaks--that would rival the factory setup in any high end car. Its mostly about putting it together right.

Of course, if youre not one to wheel and deal, you can certainly spend 5X more.

Even a 10" sub would make a huge difference, 6x9s dont quite cut it anymore, better off upgrading the front components and getting some subwoofer action going on in there.

Go down your local ice shop, show/tell em your car and then ask their advice on what to get. Say "ooooh, looks nice but its a little bit expensive, what cheap stuff would you recommend?" A proper specialist will get all geeky on ya but they know what sounds good together.

Then come away with a shopping list and look on ebay :)

You dont need a sub, dont spend money on a sub when you can pay extra and get a good set off 6x9s... A good set of 6x9s kicks out a fair bit of bass and putting in an amp is a good idea :)

dont bother with 6x9s.
They drag the sound stage into the back of the car.
When your at a concert, you dont have your back to the stage.

Im guessing its a small car.  Get a 4 channel amp, some nice components up front and a small sub in the boot.

Er, nope. Thats against the laws of acoustics, sir. If you have proper 2-way 6" up front, the only thing the rear adds is bass--which is omnidirectional. If youre worried about proper imaging, get a crossover for the front, and mount your tweets on top of the dash.

I think soopah was referring to just having 6x9s stuck on the rear parcel shelf, which is dire, and what I have in my car :(

Two fronts beat two rears if youre forced to have a set. Thats when its good to get a small tube style sub as door speaks often lack in the bass department.

6" speakers with bass can be found. I mounted some long throw ones with magnets the size of hockey pucks, on my Saabs rear deck. Replaced the gimpy board with proper plywood and carpet of course. Tightest...bass..ever. :ptu:

If you go for 6x9s youll need to mess about iwth a stelath shelf and bollocks, better off just gettin a 10" sub and feelin the bassy goodness.

Yeah, a good set of 6x9s without a stealth shelf normally means kissing goodbye to your rear window & shelf. A bloke I knew had this happen even tho he did have them stealthed.

I vote Soopah.
