im looking for an old 4x4 to get me around the UK for adventure racing/mountain biking/camping...

nowt flash, nowt poncey, just something to do the job....

Lada Niva looks interesting, as does the old Land Rover Defenders...

Needs to be cheap and reliable...

Serious

If you want cheap to buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee should be about Ã,£2K at auction but will cost you Ã,£4k a year for fuel if run as a main car (expect 10-12mpg).

redneck

defender. nothing else tbh

Lada Niva! :) FTW!

They dont look too bad either! quite like em :)

get a 77-85 Toyota Hilux with rust spots. All props to Landies for hardcore offroading, but the Toyotas drivetrain invincibility and relative economy give it the win in most situations.

4x4 isnt really needed for most fire roads and the like either, front wheel drive can be nice, and ground clearance with skid plates can be handy, but just in the roughest situations.

One of my fondest motoring memories is visiting my friend Candice in Idaho, and meeting her buds at a remote lodge at the end of a rough dirt road. I kept up quite handily in a 1.0L Daihatsu, being careful not to high-center the little rascal.

Lada Niva:

It aint a landie... its a lada :) and it rocks!

Madrocker

old 2 1/4 delsel series 2/3 tbh.
Cheap as chips and will run forever.

Id go with the defender too, parts are gonna be way more availiable than the lada.

If you were prepared to do a lot of work, you can get some Unimogs cheap - some of the older ones - and theyre the ultimate off road vehicle - look underneath there and you arent going to see a diff housing hanging 8 inches off the floor - youre going to get about 4 feet of real ground clearance (On the biggest version)

Heres a mid-range mog for size:

Suzuki SJ.

You can get it in a 1.0, a 1.3 or a 2.5 v6.

Yeah bitch.

VW Baja :D

Mark

The SJ came only as a 410 or 413?

2.5 was the vitara surely?
