im looking for an old 4x4 to get me around the UK for adventure racing/mountain biking/camping...
nowt flash, nowt poncey, just something to do the job....
Lada Niva looks interesting, as does the old Land Rover Defenders...
Needs to be cheap and reliable...
fiat panda?
"nowt flash, nowt poncey"
Defender tbh.
Mitsubishi Shogun perhaps?
Quote from: Cypher"nowt flash, nowt poncey"
Defender tbh.
i thought that, but a mate of a mate owns a Niva and the only way to sum it up is, bomb proof... :!:
So is a Toyota Hilux Invincible.
If you want cheap to buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee should be about Ã,£2K at auction but will cost you Ã,£4k a year for fuel if run as a main car (expect 10-12mpg).
he said non poncy.
defender. nothing else tbh
Lada Niva! :) FTW!
They dont look too bad either! quite like em :)
get a 77-85 Toyota Hilux with rust spots. All props to Landies for hardcore offroading, but the Toyotas drivetrain invincibility and relative economy give it the win in most situations.
4x4 isnt really needed for most fire roads and the like either, front wheel drive can be nice, and ground clearance with skid plates can be handy, but just in the roughest situations.
One of my fondest motoring memories is visiting my friend Candice in Idaho, and meeting her buds at a remote lodge at the end of a rough dirt road. I kept up quite handily in a 1.0L Daihatsu, being careful not to high-center the little rascal.
Lada Niva:

It aint a landie... its a lada :) and it rocks!
old 2 1/4 delsel series 2/3 tbh.
Cheap as chips and will run forever.
Id go with the defender too, parts are gonna be way more availiable than the lada.
If you were prepared to do a lot of work, you can get some Unimogs cheap - some of the older ones - and theyre the ultimate off road vehicle - look underneath there and you arent going to see a diff housing hanging 8 inches off the floor - youre going to get about 4 feet of real ground clearance (On the biggest version)
Heres a mid-range mog for size:
http://hk.geocities.com/estima_iaa/MB-Unimog-U2000-silber1.jpg
Suzuki SJ.
You can get it in a 1.0, a 1.3 or a 2.5 v6.
Yeah bitch.
VW Baja :D
(http://www.desertrides.com/photo/your_rides/rides/bigbird949@yahoo.com-bug.jpg)
The SJ came only as a 410 or 413?
2.5 was the vitara surely?
4trak? Cant remember who makes it tho...
My bad, its a conversion option.
They now use Buick engines up to 3.8 litre.
Diahatsu.
Paid Ã,£500 for this last year. Bit tatty but had a years MOT, tax and runs nicely. 3.5 V8 EFi so is a bit thirsty, but will be much cheaper to buy than a Defender and if theyre looked after will go on for ever.
Mine also has working A/C, PAS, Elec windows etc. Huge fun to drive and comfortable, whilst being excellent on the rough stuff.

Im dubious of its MOT. How did it pass with that foglight?
Toyota Hilux, the one they tried to detroy on Top Gear. Although not that one particullary but they are cheapish to run, good 4WD cars. Get a towbar on one and you could tow lots of things too :D
Optional Extras?

Bit muddy...

Its the english MOT, any old sh*te will pass there - dangerous is how I would describe it based on my experience of cars bought over there.

I think you confusing english with american. ;)
The state of the cars over there can be bad - some of the stuff i saw on the road to vegas was shocking! But some of the cars that I have bought from over the water have been downright dangerous, with a years MOT
We have centralised testing here, at a limited number of national test centres, where the people doing the test can perform NO work on the car - theyre there to test it, not to try and invent faults to charge you for.
The downside is the wait and depth of test involved - but it is safer.
front fogs arent compulsory by law and so dont need to actually work?!
Jaimz
This is a good link to show you the differences:

This
Or this
Both of those are perfect examples of what Id heartily endorse myself. Chuck Norris would approve.
Yes and no Jamiz.
If they are fitted and not covered, they have to work.
Cover them and they are fine.
Unimog - just imagine trying to get an insurance quote for that "Yes, Id like to have a insurance quote on my Merc...What model sir?...Unimog...Erm"
Mate of mine who made a lot of money off selling land runs a U5000 on the road - classed as an agricultural vehicle somehow, and runs it on red diesel !
I guess the three main thumbs up have been for the Niva, Defender and the Hilux Invincible.
he could use teh excuse he was towing houses....
and old L2.5 L200 . Where I used to wokr has one as well as a C280 and an Izuzu Trooper. The L200 was what we used to use most of the time for moving crap around. Only problem we had with it was the wheel bearings after 240k miles and the clutch has been done a couple of times.
meh - i have a zx with more miles than that on the original clutch
Quote from: BXGTi16Vmeh - i have a zx with more miles than that on the original clutch
the ZX doesnt weigh quite so much, and it probably isnt driven daily by 3 nutters with a full load.
Quote from: Beaker3 nutters with a full load.

Must resist urge to make smutty joke......arghhh
Anyone know where I can get a full list of what is tested on a MoT etc?

Compared to in Ireland it aint much to pass an MoT at all....
I had a van fail once because Id replaced part of the back chassie with a bit of plastic guttering... i argues it wasn;t structural because of the talift above it but the guy wouldent listen....
so i painted it green to match the rest of the van (with the nice green lead paint i used to paint the van ;) ) .... went somewhere else and it passed !
was a good van that one.... tho the van would twist so you couldent close the back doors whit a full (over) load on :dunno:

Hmm, Hilux invincible is a beast and has LOTS of toys, Id get one.
Parts will be cheaper than the defender, Id assume. It wont break down as much as the defender. And if the Lada Niva needs a new radiator after a few months, you cant exactly go down to your local Lada dealer and get a new one.
Id go with the Hilux.

Lada parts = scrappies or generics :) Think thats where my mum gets parts for her samara when stuff went wrong with it. Think my dads bodged on some ford parts to it too no idea what though.
I wouldnt buy a car from Ireland, probably got a carbomb in there.
Quote from: soopahflyI wouldnt buy a car from Ireland, probably got a carbomb in there.
hmm, what is it and all you guys with bombs ?
I wouldnt buy a car from Ireland either - too much mucking abut with registration plates and theyre a bit on the dear side - thats why Ill only buy them here, in Northern Ireland.
Will definately think twice in future about buying any more MOTd scrap from the mainland though - unless its something I really cant get here or down south.
im liking the sound and look of the Hi-Lux...
I can see myself with a hush puppy dog on the passenger seat:
