TheSpecialist (http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EEukZpklFAhkcWwSgZ.php), infamous for hacking the original xbox dvd firmware (only months ago) has done it again, 360 style this time...
This isnt any good for homebrew though, but a step forward!
Impressive stuff, tis a step closer to homebrew and the possibility of linux, gonna be hard to get that kinda stuff into though with the xex tech, this is mostly a piracy hack.... hopefully wont be released as that though
Nothing was proven with the previous hacking, nor has anything been proven for this. And the only thing this opens up is piracy so I dont think its a good thing to be taking about...
This will only allow the ability to play with "backups", it would defeat the media check if it does what it claims.
Well, there is a video proving that they can run a back up...
However, judging by the large eeprom they are using and you have to open the DVD drive to make this mod it doesnt seem like it will be a widespread mod, thankfully.

thats the positive thing.
The thing is....like with the Playstations and original Xbox, the fact you could play "backups" increased its popularity. Overall I agree its a bad thing but Im sure the companies cant deny it increased console sales.

most consoles cost more to make than the sell for, they make the Ã,£ from the software, Nintendo are probobly the only exception as they make money on the systems

Usually though the alledged backups are sold on or given away as pirate copies. As the Xbox costs more to make than they sell it for any profit comes from those games, in fact they have to sell games just to break even. So far Microsoft has made a loss on X-box every year, so much so that it wipes out the entire profit from their Leisure division and put it into debt. Any other company would have been wiped out or cut its losses. The 360 may mean that they can make a profit but only if the can prevent people using pirated games...

not going to be mainstream.
I actually read the full guide on how to do it, and OMG, its baddass what you got to do and there is like a billion ways you can kill your xbox360 doing the steps.
I bet that was one of like 10 consoles they tried and killed.
