Title: 360 HD-DVD Add-on £129!
Post by: Goblin on September 27, 2006, 18:52:39 PM
Kotaku (http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/hddvd/360-hddvd-for-200-in-us-203646.php)

Microsoft just announced at X06 that the 360 HD-DVD player will retail for Ã,£129 in the UK.

That is a seriously good price considering the Toshiba HD-DVD stand-alone jobs will start in the Ã,£400 to Ã,£500 range.

Lets hope its actually good :)

EDIT: It comes with a copy of King Kong and the 360 Universal Remote as well.

*looks for pre-order ready retail outlet*

:D

Id still like more info on whether it has a HDMI or not and if not, how it hooks up to the Xbox as I thought HD bandwidth requirements were more than could be provided by USB2 ??

No HDMI. Connects over the USB2 (400Mbps, plenty for HD video). Will upscale ordinary DVD *IF* you connect over VGA, but not component (I think thats right). The update to enable all this will also upscale games and DVDs to 1080p if you need that.

The upscaling, from what Ive heard, is available on both VGA and component, but only VGA goes to 1080p, and component goes to 1080i.

And yes it connects via USB2.

Why is it a seperate box, rather than to upgrade the existing one?

Its to give people an option. If they want an HD-DVD player, then they can buy the add-on. If not, they save themselves Ã,£129.

Also, to have it as an upgrade for the people who already have 360s would mean that MS would have to recall them as replacing the drive yourself would breach warranty.

Already got mine a week before the Wii released. I have King Kong (came with the drive), Serenity, F&F: Tokyo Drift, just got an email saying that Slither had shipped, and have Corpse Bride and Army of Darkness on order.

The quality on the three that I have is amazing. You can definately see much more detail in everything and the U-Control feature on Tokyo Drift is great, it lets you view behind-the-scenes footage, storyboard, on-set photos and more as the movie is playing.

Interesting news.  Seems to make sense to add it to this thread.

I think its safe to expect from now on people will be doing new versions of the same machines

Sony looks set to announces an updated psp using those new mini hardrives ether having 32 or 60 gig built in hardrives and better software (all psps) which will allow legit purchase of roms from the sony online store which will play on the psp (ps1 roms that is)

Doesnt annoy me at all.  I will be buying one of the new models just for the larger HD and cooler running (and hopefully quiet DVD drive)
