Title: 3D drawing to a stack of slices
Post by: Mongoose on March 29, 2011, 16:43:44 PM
Hi all, slightly odd request but maybe someone will know of something

does anyone know of a piece of software which can be used to draw in 3D and then save the resulting area as a stack of 2D images, like CT slices?

cheers all

oh forgot to say, free for preference but paid for not out of the question if it's not too much.

The guy that made that starship Enterprise recreation for minecraft used exactly that sort of software, I couldn't tell you what it was called though. A quick bit of googling would probably see you right.

nice one clock'd, well remembered! to google I go!

Curse, looks like he did each layer by hand in GIMP, which is precisely the approach I'm trying to avoid! There has to be software somewhere which will take a 3D model and make slices out of it, because that's how all those 3D printers work.

Ah I guess I got the wrong end of the stick about how he did it, I remembered he was a bit obsessive so no wonder he was doing it layer at a time :/

This might be useful, it says there's a freeware program called Wings3D that can do it:
