Title: Alarm and shut down problem
Post by: Rivkid on May 01, 2007, 09:28:37 AM
Hi all,

My aging pc (athlon xp 3000) has recently been reformatted and brought back into frequent use. I upgraded to 2.5 GB RAM also.

Lately its been shutting down randomly (usually in games), whereby I hear an alarm from the PC speaker (dee doo dee doo - kinda like an ambulance!) then off. Ive checked the temperatures and it seems ok, raised the shutdown temp to 70 (usually runs around 60), and Ive removed all but one ram chip to check those.

Im wondering if its not a PSU error - maybe time for a new one. Or maybe time for full system upgrade? Trouble is I only game old stuff like adventure games (murder on the orient express etc..) so not sure an upgrade would be worthwhile. What do you think?

sounds like a memory error.  DO you get the "Siren" 3 times?  so dee doo dee doo dee doo then it shuts down?
