The 'best' are Virgin, O2 and BE from what I hear, not saying there are not others.. I'll let others comment on that, but expect these may be more expensive.

If money is a major factor, do you have a mobile or sky contract? As you may be able to get a good deal through them?

Also check out: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/phones/cheap-broadband (http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/phones/cheap-broadband)

And maybe see if the comparison websites do broadband (Don't use Go Compare out of principle as their adverts are far too annoying!)

Do you mean wireless as in ADSL+wireless router or wireless as in over the 3g network?

I've got my adsl from Talk Talk and they have been fine and pretty cheap.

It depends on who runs your equipment in your local exchange as to what will be cheapest, o2 is a good option if they have anything at your exchange.

adsl is over the phone line.... 3g is with a little usb dongle with a mobile simcard in it

adsl is faster, and cheaper if you use it a lot / want to download much

a dongle is good if you want to go out of the house with it, but slower and expensive if you want to download...

So, 50mb download speeds.......

Do people generallly get those kind of speeds with Virgin? I may be moving home and they may be able to supply me with broadband. Their pricing looks good when you add a telephone line into it, which I rarely use anyhow.

yes they do... or very close.... it'll be 10 times better than adsl unless you're very close to the exchange anyway !

For gaming a Low Latency connection with no packet drop is more important than a lot of bandwidth; although they kinda go hand in hand.
As long as you've got 512kbps upload it's more important that your connection latency be low (at least sub 50ms to London).

Chig Ching :D

Anyway...

If you're planning on gaming DON'T EVEN CONTEMPLATE 3G. Wireless mobile network data carries too high a latency price to make it usable for gaming AND Please don't use Wifi either for similar reasons.

I have a 3096/1024 ADSL2+ connection that carries around a 20ms latency into London that I generally use for gaming.
My Virgin connection is for browsing, streaming, downloading and uploading to offsite backup :)

3g is only worth looking into if you dont have/want a phone line which also saves your £~12 a month.
If you are in the right area you get pretty good pings and speeds.
When I am in the city I get ping of 100ms, 4mbps down 2mbps up.
If you do alot of downloading it might work out dearer as you have to pay alot of you go over your allowance.

ADSL or cable is the way to go.

Slide your postcode up samknows (or post it) so that we can see which LLU providers are in your exchange
