Title: Anyone know anything about microphones?
Post by: Kunal on October 24, 2006, 09:15:24 AM
Need to spec up a portable podcasting kit for work need some help identifying quality microphones and other bits.

Funds arent really an issue. Well probably be getting one of the new Core2Duo MacBook Pros as apart of the package.

So;

1) Decent desk mic,

2) USB/FW audio interface unit.

Any recommendations or pointers to sites etc.

i would you can spend a lot on a mic, and not really use it fully.

my shure mic is fantastic as it has noise cancelling and manages to filter out residual noise onstage, otherwise youll just get another drum channel :P

I use a Rode NT-3 Condenser MIC for recording and I must say its superb.

With a pop guard its as good as anything and is a great price.

weve got a few of sures sm58s (http://www.shure.com/ProAudio/Products/WiredMicrophones/us_pro_SM58-CN_content) and some beat 57s (http://www.shure.com/ProAudio/Products/WiredMicrophones/us_pro_Beta57A_content) at uni, theyre top vocal mics :)

If you going for the cheaper route, a behringer UltraWank (http://www.behringer.com/XM8500/index.cfm?lang=ENG) *cough* I mean UltraVoice. Theyre ok-ish, sort of, but they also seem to be indestructable. Im talking about being thrown 50m down a corridor or being dropped from a lighting grid 15m up onto a concrete flor and they still work.

every band i know used the SM57s and 58s, they seem to be about the best for usage in noisy places.

Ive been looking at the Shure Beta 58A. Just need to find a small desk stand for it and an audio interface for the MacBook. Any recommendations for those? The M-Audio Firewire Audiophile looks good.

what are you actually recording?  at least one of my mates records every gig they do onto his HP Lappy, and does it through a firewire soundcard.

At most just a couple of vocal channels. Podcasting for Vodafones various channels/partners. They basically want to copy Cisco and go down a similar route.

That M-Audio Firewire is more than up to the job.
