Not sure if this was posted elsewhere but yesterday the ultra portable Asus eee was released.
Virtually everywhere has sold out, of course and systems are selling for silly money on Ebay... I have however managed to get one as I have been looking for a while to get something to replace my aging Acer Aspire 15.4" laptop.
Cheers

You finally got it then, so how is it? Is the solid state disk fast?
if anyone wants one... ebuyer has 6 of them (apparently) ;)
^ I dont want one but I cannot find them on ebuyer at all. Knighty you truly are the King of Men.
sneaky recovery post...

;) ;) :)
I knew about them going on sale but theyre a bit expensive and the screen size is small for writing. How about a review then? :D
hmm, the 8gb model not available yet?
4gb is slightly small =(
still want one tho
I fancy a 8gb one for Uni :)
Even if I got an extra 4gb USB stick that should be more than enough space :)
Is it actually useful for anything ? 7" screen wow.

I wrote half a book using a palm then moved onto an 800*600 ten inch laptop to complete it, so yes. Mostly people will write letters, emails, short reports and similar on it so it should be reasonably useful for that.
The big thing about this is its small size, normally that would cost you an arm and a leg so even with the UK price hike its far cheaper than anything similar.
Would prefer a longer working time of about 8 hours but you cant have everything.
I will be playing with this middle of next week (having it shipped over from the UK).
My needs on a laptop are very meagre, and my monsterous Acer Aspire will be retired from active duty.
I configure networks (wireless and wired) and do accounts, send receive emails and do alot of remote admin, so this PC would do what I want provided I sling on XP. I run an accounts package here that doesnt work on linux, so Ive really got no choice about the OS.
I think that the screen should be enough, I just want something to pop in my bag when I go to work, not have to heave this 4kg monster around with me.
Cheers

Ill probably pick one up just to browse the net from downstairs via the wireless connection, I cant really justify a full laptop for something as simple as this but for occasional use itll do fine. The better half is picking one up as well to connect to the projectors at school to give powerpoint demonstrations and suchlike; it saves carrying a laptop around.
Looks like ebuyer has sold out for the moment anyway.
Officially priced at £220 while there was a review for it this morning on "Something For The Weekend"
100th Post Too! :D

They do look quite cool.
Im waiting to see what people do with them. Dont fancy Xandros Linux.
Id want one for on the road sysadmin - so all I care about is having a good terminal and web browser

in stock.
Asda is sold out, aria had a few 2GB models on their super special but they had gone too by the time I went and looked. They still seem to have some stock.
I finally got to see one when my brother decided to have a look around Computer World. Its tiny, forget it if you have big fingers, but it works adequately and the screen is useable, although there might be problems editing large documents. The keyboard is adequate, for short use at least, actually much better than I was expecting. For the price its a steal, if you have a use for it, although it would have been even nicer if it was cheaper.
Decided to buy a 2GB one from ebuyer, I doubt if I would be using the full 4GB anyway and I could upgrade if I absolutely need to.
My first Linux computer, although I have dabbled with it in the past.
Where is Maxi when you need him?
Seriously tempted by one of these, they are difficult to find at the moment but you can see who has them in stock here (http://www.pc-how-to.com/laptops/asustek-eee-pc.htm). Think I might wait for the 8Gig version though, does anybody know when they will be available?
It doesnt include ebuyer, which was £10 cheaper for the 2GB version. BT price for the 4GB one looks good though.
No idea when they will do an 8GB version, they are trying their damnedest to keep up with supply of the ones they are shoving out now. TBH it shouldnt be too difficult to upgrade and you dont really need that big an internal disk anyway. [edit]Then again you could just use an eight GB USB dongle. [/edit]
Hopefully mine should be here by Friday, so I will have a look at it properly and put up a mini-review or something.
Seems to be a few eee sites popping up http://www.eeeuser.com/
just chuck a big fat SD car din and you are good to go.
Arrived a few hours ago, as I said its tiny, very few initial problems but I havent got around to setting up the LAN yet :D
Issues, its slow to load large files in the wordprocessor, (tried a 56k words file) I could do with a simpler RTF editor.
Screen is a little small, but its still very useable, could do with an extra couple of inches but it isnt really a problem. Keyboard is going to be problematic for those with big fingers. This will make it a fantastic lappy for kids though, which it was originally intended as.
Probably worth waiting for the larger screen, but that is going to be more expensive.
Im waiting for the 10" screen version, its quite a leap up from the 7" screen considering that the case size will stay the same.

I have had a play with a couple of these and I think they are pretty mediocre, this bigger sized screen one sounds a much needed add on. Currently it looks like the side of a house with a window in it, surely they could have put a 10" version in from the word go.
Apparently at CES 2008 ASUS denied there being a 10" version. They showed a 1001 model eee pc a few months back with a 10" screen but now saying they arent going that route. Been reading a few articles to get the screen size to 1024x768 and getting xp on the things etc. Think I will wait for the newer versions to arrive as rumoured. Plus when I am not using it, it will be good for the bairn to pick it up and have a play around :)
