Title: Back to ubuntu.
Post by: PuNk on January 04, 2007, 01:57:38 AM
I got a new laptop arriving soon, and the first thing I plan to do is get ubuntu on it.

AMD Turion 64 X2
ATi radeon xpress 1150 (256mb)
gigoram

anyway, been digging around on the ubuntuforums, I think im pretty sorted for getting everything working, (wifi + gfx seem to be the main problems but ive found a few suggested fixes).

Looks like ill have to use ati drivers instead of fglrx or whatever i used to use on my dual boot, the ati drivers were never as good for me performance wise, bit gutted about that because I want all my fancy 3d effects, hopefully itll be ok.

anyway, ive been out of the loop for quite a while, and the main thing Id like is some cool apt-get lists, so anyone got any to post?

Fglrx should work fine. You may have to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to dial it in. Could be wrong. There are plenty of threads at ubuntuforums.org about installing either driver.

Id be more worried about wifi on such new kit, though I heard it worked out of the box for one guy.

Check out my thread about setting up effortless wifi roaming for Ubuntu (under Gnome). http://www.tekforums.co.uk/posts/list/4539.page

just an update:

Linux is installed, some troubles detecting the hard drive but thats sorted now.

I had problems with the wifi as expected, also sorted now.

Everything else is working fine.

Gunna try upgrade my gfx drivers now, my girlfriend want me to install beryl so she can play around with it haha.

ledge.

ps. thanks for all your help maxi, between you and the ubuntu forums, its all been  pretty easy.

edit: thinking about it, standby mode doesnt work yet, and i dont think its using both of the cores on my x2 chip atm, so that needs doing, i remember seeing a how to for it though so it should be ok :D

I decided ubuntu wasnt for me =(

But Kubuntu, definately is, I was spending hours trying to customise gnome to how i liked it, and when i finally got it how i wanted, it looked like KDE haha.

So yeah, on Kubuntu now, it runs a lot faster for me, which I wasnt expecting.

Im completely noob now though, I dunno what the package managers are or anything, it took me bloody hours just to set the wireless up, mainly because I didnt know how to enable it in the GUI. lol.

PS: I love how ipod just works. Just plug it in, and then its there on desktop.

amazing.
