Title: Basic networking help
Post by: mrt on September 10, 2007, 08:14:06 AM
I have one XP pro machine and one XP Vista Premium machine. Big CAT 5 crossover cable. Would like to network between the two. Have machines static IPs of 192.168.0.5 and 192.168.0.9, both on subnet of 255.255.255.0, XP machine can see Vista machine but seems to hang when trying to access? Lastly, have router upstairs (XP) connected to the web - would like computer downstairs (vista) to share internet connection as wireless signal is really crap. What do I need to set the defautl gateway? the IP of XP machine?

Vista machine does not see XP machine. Basically, Vista machine before upgrade, was on XP pro and it worked fine using cable and same IP settings. No firewalls other than built in ones?

A bit stuck and not sure what I am doing, thanks!

Vista does not work on a network with just IP settings, you have to give it more than that.  It wants to know what its connected to otherwise it wont allow file sharing, network sharing, printer sharing etc.

This is all managed through a program called the networking centre.

Crossover cable PC to PC and it works??? /Edit .....WTF, hangover or what kicking in....

"Crossover cable PC to PC and it works??? " .... should it not?!?

I will have a look at the bit you mentioned.  I have put them both on the same network domain.  Not sure what else I would need to do, hopefully it will become clear later?

EDIT:  Thanks for your response.   ;)

crossover is the proper way to go between NIC to NIC, HUB to HUB so no problems there, straight patch is between HUB & NIC.

vista is defiantly not a plug it in and go when it comes to winxp as mentioned so hopefully that network center should sort you out, if not then there might be permission problems also (need to setup another login for the other machine etc), friend here at work struggled to get it going for a good while although i dont know the specifics on what was causing it / how he solved it.

Thanks.

Really annoying, as the machine downstairs (media center) used to have MCE2005, which was basically XP, and I had both machines chatting with no issues.  The moment I have upgraded, nada! Am sure it should be relatively straightforward.  Vista is very nice though, all the same.

Vista Gateway: XP machine. XP machines gateway: However you access the internet.

Enable ICS on the XP machine by ticking "allow other computers to use this network connection" in the advanced panel of network settings.

As for getting vista to see your XP machine, Ive noooo idea, not done any of that shiznit at all.

Make sure the PCs are in the same workgroup.

My Vista 64bit is connected to a Printer thats directly connected to an XP Machine & my laptop and my lappy can stream movies off my Vista PC happily enough. Done nothing special... infact, everything is run DHCP off my router
